Yamin, Zambrano and Armijo Earn Top-16 Finishes at Junior Pan Ams

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Three members of Team USA advanced to the table of 16 at the Junior Pan American Championships in Ponce, Puerto Rico on Thursday.

Sixteen-year-old Liana Yamin (Allendale, N.J.) finished the pools with a 4-1 record to earn a bye into the 16 where she fenced Eleanor Harvey (CAN) – the #6-ranked junior in the world. Yamin placed ninth after losing the bout, 15-8, and Harvey went on to win gold.

Seeded 12th out of the pools, 15-year-old Jessenia Zambrano (New York City, N.Y.) won her opening bout over Dannette Rios Serranos (PUR) in the table of 32. In the table of 16, Zambrano lost her bout to Melissa Rebolledo (MEX), 15-7, and finished in 12th place.  Zambrano will be back in action on Friday when she will fence in the cadet women’s foil event.

In the junior men’s saber event, 18-year-old Gabriel Armijo (San Diego, Calif.) placed 15th after a 15-12 loss to Stefano Lucchetti (ARG) who went on to win gold.

Armijo’s teammate, 17-year-old Sandy Vingoe (New York City, N.Y.) lost in the table of 32 to Gustavo Arias Cuellar (ESA) and placed 17th overall.
