(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – A medalist in the team event at the London Olympic Games, Courtney Hurley (San Antonio, Texas) placed seventh at the Leipzig Epee World Cup in Germany on Saturday.

A favorite to win her third NCAA title as a redshirt junior at Notre Dame next month, Hurley was exempt from the pools on Friday as the tournament’s 14th seed.

Hurley led from start to finish in her first two bouts as she claimed a 15-9 victory over Marie Florence Candassamy (FRA) in the table of 64 and defeated 2007 Junior World medalist Marzia Muroni (ITA), 15-7, in the table of 32.

In the table of 16, Hurley led the bout, 14-11, and held off a late comeback by Erika Kirpu (EST) to score a double touch late in the second period and win the bout, 15-14.

Hurley fenced two-time Senior World medalist Irina Embrich (EST) in the quarter-finals where Embrich won the bout, 15-11, and Hurley finished seventh.

London Olympic medalist Maya Lawrence (Teaneck, N.J.) also was exempt from pools, but placed 36th after a 15-6 loss to eventual gold medalist Yana Zvereva (RUS).

Nineteen-year-old Isis Washington (Parsippany, N.J.) earned her first top-64 result at a Senior World Cup.

Washington, a sophomore at St. John’s University, won two of her six bouts in the pools and defeated Ana London (ISR), 15-14, with three seconds remaining in the first period of their preliminary table of 128 on Friday.

In the next round, Washington defeated Laura Giesen (GER), 15-7, to advance to the table of 64 on Saturday.

Due to Washington’s pool results, she entered the table of 64 as the last seed and drew top-ranked Yujie Sun (CHN) – the 2012 London Olympic bronze medalist in the individual event.

Washington held a 6-4 lead at the end of the first period, but Sun made a comeback in the second before finishing off the bout, 15-10. Washington finished in 64th place and Sun went on to take the bronze medal.
