Lee Kiefer Places Seventh at the St. Petersburg Foil World Cup

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Eighteen-year-old Lee Kiefer (Lexington, Ky.), a fifth-place finisher at the London Olympic Games, placed seventh at the St. Petersburg Foil World Cup in Russia on Saturday.

Kiefer, a freshman at Notre Dame, was exempt from the preliminary rounds on Friday and entered the tournament as the fourth seed in the table of 64 on Saturday.

Kiefer earned decisive wins in her first two bouts where she defeated Sandra Bingenheimer (GER), 15-4, and Sophie Troiano (GBR), 15-6.

In the table of 16, Kiefer defeated six-time Senior World medalist Aida Mohamed (HUN), 15-9.

Kiefer fell two touches short of winning her first World Cup medal in the quarter-finals when she lost her bout to two-time Junior World Champion Inna Deriglazova (RUS), 15-13, who went on to win gold.

Deriglazova also defeated Kiefer’s London Olympic teammate Nicole Ross (New York City, N.Y.) in the table of 32 by a score of 15-7. Ross finished 30th overall.
