Olympic Fencers Go Head-to-Head in Support of Fencing-In-The-Schools Program

On Monday, April 8, at 7:00 PM E.S.T., Universal Sports Network will broadcast the third FENCING MASTERS event showcasing exciting matchups between several of the best U.S. Olympic fencers.  Included will be 2008 Olympic Silver Medalist Tim Morehouse, who is also the founder of FENCING MASTERS and Fencing in the Schools, a program designed to introduce students across the U.S. to fencing.    Morehouse will go head-to-head with current #1 ranked US men’s saber fencer Daryl Homer while on the women’s side Olympians Nzingha Prescod and Nicole Ross will compete in the women’s foil.

FENCING MASTERS was founded by Tim Morehouse in 2010 to help elevate the profile of the sport of fencing.  It remains the only regularly televised US Fencing tournament featuring Olympians.  This year’s event, which is sponsored by Sabra, Absolute Fencing, and Bodhizone, took place at New York City’s Baryshnikov Arts Center.  Proceeds from event ticket sales went to support Morehouse’s Fencing in the Schools program.  The program aims to dramatically increase the number of students actively fencing and highlight it as a great fitness alternative to combat childhood obesity in America’s youth while also instilling Olympic ideals.

Fencing-In-The-Schools has launched a pilot program for over 1,500 students in East and West Harlem in New York City.  A number of other markets are also in place with an eventual goal of signing up 1 million students by 2023.

Universal Sports Network provides viewers unparalleled access to world-class sporting events, including the most year-round, Olympic-related programming of any network. Only Universal Sports showcases the world’s best athletes competing in more than 30 sports annually, and this year will be the home to 25 World Championships.  This is the second year Universal Sports will be the broadcast home for the FENCING MASTERS event.

“Universal Sports is a great partner for FENCING MASTERS and a great supporter of the sport of fencing itself,” said Tim Morehouse.  “At this year’s FENCING MASTERS event, we were fortunate to be able to showcase a tremendous roster of some of America’s most talented fencers.  I know audiences are going to enjoy watching the excitement and athleticism of this fast-paced sport in the upcoming broadcast.”
