(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – London Olympian Daryl Homer (Bronx, N.Y.) earned Team USA’s top result on Saturday at the Athens Saber World Cup in Greece.

Seeded ninth in the tournament, Homer was exempt from the pools and preliminary rounds on Friday.

In the table of 64, Homer defeated Ciprian Galatanu (ROU), 15-11. As the only American to advance to the table of 32, Homer lost his next bout to Marco Ciari (ITA), 15-8.

Two weeks after winning his first individual Division I National Championship title, Aleksander Ochocki (Linden, N.J.) went 6-0 in the pools to advance to the table of 64 for the first time this season. On Saturday, Ochocki entered the table of 64 as the 21st seed and fenced a close bout with Ferenc Valkai, but lost to the Hungarian, 15-14,  and finished 34th.

Andrew Fischl (Huntington, N.Y.) finished 4-2 in the pools and needed two victories in the preliminary tables to advance to the table of 64 at a World Cup for the second time this season. Fischl won his first bout against Evaggelos Boukas (GRE), 15-10, and edged 2011 Junior World silver medalist Trofim Velikiy (RUS), 15-14, in the next round.

On Saturday, Fischl finished 51st after a 15-13 loss to 15th seed Andriy Yagodka (UKR).

Fencing in his first tournament since fracturing his hand earlier this season, 2012 Olympian Jeff Spear (Wynantskill, N.Y.) split his pool bouts, 3-3, on Friday. Spear advanced to the table of 64 after a 15-10 victory over Guillermo Mancheno (ESP) and a 15-13 win against Csaba Norbert Gall (HUN).

As the 61st seed in the table of 64, Spear drew four-time Senior World Team Champion and 2004 Olympic medalist Aleksey Yakimenko (RUS) in his opening bout on Saturday. Yakimenko won the bout, 15-12, and Spear finished 61st.

On Sunday, Homer, Ochocki, Fischl and three-time Senior World Team member Ben Igoe (Staten Island, N.Y.) will fence in the team competition. Team USA is seeded seventh and will fence the winner of the match between Greece and Ukraine in the table of 16.
