(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Team USA continued to dominate the medal count on Thursday when the men’s foil and women’s saber teams won gold at the Pan American Championships in Cartagena, Colombia.

Led by two-time Olympic Champion Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.), the U.S. Women’s Saber Team was seeded first in the table of 16 and earned a bye into the quarter-finals.

Ibtihaj Muhammad (Maplewood, N.J.) was unable to fence in the team competition due to an injury, but Zagunis and teammates 2012 Olympian Dagmara Wozniak (Avenel, N.J.) and Eliza Stone (Chicago, Ill.) quickly dispatched the Dominican Republic, 45-24, and won their semifinal bout over Canada, 45-20.

In the gold medal final, Team USA defeated Mexico, 45-27, to continue an undefeated streak at the Pan Am Championships that extends to the first Zonal Championships held in 2006.

The win is the fourth for the women’s saber team this week after Zagunis won gold and Stone and Wozniak took silver and bronze, respectively, in the individual competition.

The men’s foil team also followed a 1-2-3 result in the individual competition with a gold medal in the team event.

Alexander Massialas (San Francisco, Calif.) anchored his London Olympic teammates – Race Imboden (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Miles Chamley-Watson (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Gerek Meinhardt (San Francisco, Calif.) -- to a 45-23 victory over Chile in the quarter-finals after a first-round bye.

In the semifinals, Team USA defeated Mexico, 45-19, and Brazil edged Canada, 45-43, to set up a rematch of the 2012 Pan Am finals.

The Brazilians started out strong and held Team USA’s lead to 15-13 after the first three bouts, but Chamley-Watson, Imboden and Massialas gave up just five touches in six bouts as they outscored Brazil, 30-5, to win the match, 45-18.

Competition continues on Friday with the men’s saber women’s epee team events.
