(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – A pair of San Francisco natives placed in the top eight at the Bochum Foil Junior World Cup in Germany on Saturday.

Mary McElwee, a sophomore at the Air Force Academy, finished sixth and Sabrina Massialas, a 2013 Cadet World silver medalist, placed seventh at the second Junior World Cup of the season for women’s foil.

Seeded 21^st out of the pools, McElwee trounced her first two direct elimination opponents – Aarya Berthier (SIN) and Violette Lebrun (BEL) – by 15-3 and 15-1 margins, respectively.

In the table of 16, McElwee defeated 2013 Polish Junior World Team member Martyna Dlugosz, 15-8, to qualify for her first international quarter-final.

McElwee lost her bout in the quarters to 2013 Junior World quarter-finalist Julie Mienville (FRA), 15-12, but her sixth-place result moved McElwee up to a career-high No. 6 U.S. junior women’s foil national ranking.

The 34^th seed in the direct elimination tables, Massialas defeated Russian Svetlana Tripapina, 15-9, in the table of 64 and Italian Eleonora Dini, 15-1, in the 32.

Massialas advanced to her second straight Junior World Cup quarter-final after a 15-9 win over three-time Junior World Team member Szonja Szalai (HUN).

Although she lost her next bout to 2013 Junior World medalist Francesca Palumbo (ITA), 15-12, Massialas moved from No. 4 to No. 2 in the U.S. junior rankings. The jump puts Massialas behind 2012 Olympian Lee Kiefer (Lexington, Ky.) and ahead former Junior World medalists Margaret Lu (Greenwich, Conn.) and Jackie Dubrovich (Riverdale, N.J.) who are ranked third and fourth, respectively.
