(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Fencing in the third World Cup of the season, the U.S. Women’s Epee Team continued its trend of upsetting the top teams in the world in Barcelona, Spain on Sunday.

Anchored by 2012 U.S. Olympic team bronze medalist Courtney Hurley (San Antonio, Texas), Team USA entered the event in Barcelona as the tournament’s eighth seed and included Hurley’s sister and London teammate, Kelley Hurley (San Antonio, Texas), as well as 2013 Cadet World Team member Amanda Sirico (Bowie, Md.) and former National Champion Natalie Vie (Phoenix, Ariz.)

The Americans defeated Czech Republic, 45-40, in the table of 32 and, although Sweden won silver at the St. Maur World Cup last week, it was Team USA that won the table of 16 match, 45-40.

In the quarter-finals, Team USA trailed China, the 2012 Olympic Champions, by seven touches, but Courtney Hurley brought the match back during the middle encounter and went on to anchor Team USA to a 43-36 victory.

In the semifinals, Team USA lost to Hungary, 38-35.

Team USA fenced Romania for bronze, but lost by a single touch in overtime, 23-22, to finish in fourth place.

The result moves the U.S. Women's Epee Team up to sixth in the world rankings. 

On Saturday, a pair of juniors earned the top results in the individual competition as Sirico and Anna Van Brummen (Houston, Texas), a 2012 Junior World team medalist and Princeton sophomore, each advanced to the table of 32.

Van Brummen defeated 2013 Senior World team silver medalist Yiwen Sun (CHN), 15-13, in the table of 64 and just missed the table of 16 after a 15-14 loss to 2013 Senior World Team Champion Tatyana Andryushina (RUS). Van Brummen finished 28^th overall for her first top-32 result at a Senior World Cup.

In the table of 64, Sirico edged 2012 Olympic team silver medalist Injeong Choi (KOR), 15-14, but dropped her next bout by a single touch to 2009 Senior World Champion Lyubov Shutova (RUS), 14-13, and finished 28^th overall.

Courtney Hurley finished in 48^th place after a 15-11 loss to Sanne Gars (SWE) in the table of 64.

Kelley Hurley lost her table of 64 bout to 2012 Junior World team silver medalist Yixuan Xiang (CHN), 14-12.
