Daryl Homer Places 11th at Budapest Saber Grand Prix

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – London Olympian Daryl Homer (Bronx, N.Y.) finished 11th in the second Grand Prix of the men’s saber season on Sunday in Budapest, Hungary.

Seeded 13th in the tournament, Homer opened the competition with a pair of strong wins over Dmytro Boyko (UKR) and Junmo Sung (KOR) by 15-7 and 15-9 scores, respectively.

In the table of 16, however, Homer lost to 2013 Senior World Champion Veniamin Reshetnikov (RUS), 15-11.

Three-time Senior World Team member Ben Igoe (Staten Island, N.Y.) defeated Maxim Botezatu (RUS), 15-9, in the table of 64 to advance to the table of 32 for the first time since 2012.

Igoe narrowly missed the table of 16 after a 15-14 loss to 2013 Junior World Champion Kamil Ibragimov (RUS) and finished 29th.

London Olympian Jeff Spear (Wynantskill, N.Y.) and two-time Junior World medalist Eli Dershwitz (Sherborn, Mass.) each advanced to the table of 64.

Spear fought a close bout against 2011 Senior World Champion Aldo Montano (ITA), but lost 15-12 and placed 40th overall.

Dershwitz finished in 50th place after a 15-7 loss to 2010 Senior World Champion Woo Young Won (KOR).
