Watson and Badger Earn Top-64 Finishes at Berne Epee Grand Prix

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Adam Watson (Richford, Vt.) and Peregrine Badger (Providence, R.I.) each advanced to the table of 64 at the final Epee Grand Prix of the season in Berne, Switzerland on Sunday.

Watson earned his third top-64 result of the international season after a 5-1 finish in the pools on Saturday.

In his opening direct elimination bout, Watson trailed Roman Aleksandrov (UZB), 8-6, after the first period. Aleksandrov held the two-touch lead throughout most of the second period, but Watson picked up a single to cut his opponent’s lead to one touch at 14-13. With less than a minute remaining in the period, Aleksandrov doubled out to win the bout, 15-14, and Watson placed 41st  

Badger, a 2011 Junior Olympic Champion, advanced to the second day of a senior international event for the first time. Badger went 3-3 in pools and defeated Martin Rubes (CZE), 15-9, in the preliminary table of 128 on Saturday. Fencing to move into the table of 64, Badger and teammate Jonathan Yergler (Long Island City, N.Y.) were tied at six touches each in the second period when Badger went on a four-touch run over 17 seconds to take the score to 10-6. Badger retained his lead and finished with a 15-12 victory.

On Sunday, Badger lost to 2011 Senior World team medalist Max Heinzer (SUI) and finished 59th.
