Team USA Wins Pan Am Men’s Foil and Women’s Epee Titles

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Team USA followed title wins in the individual men’s foil and women’s epee events with gold medals in the team competitions at the Pan American Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica on Wednesday.

The U.S. Men’s Foil Team of Gerek Meinhardt (San Francisco, Calif.), Miles Chamley-Watson (New York City, N.Y.), Race Imboden (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and David Willette (Lafayette, Calif.) opened with a 45-13 win over Colombia in the quarter-finals and defeated Chile, 45-25, in the semis.

A gold medalist in the individual event, Meinhardt anchored Team USA in the finals against Canada. Meinhardt, Imboden and Chamley-Watson won eight out of nine bouts and took the match, 45-21, to claim Team USA's seventh consecutive Pan Am Championship gold medal in the men's team foil event.  .

Following her gold medal win in the individual competition, epee fencer Courtney Hurley (San Antonio, Texas) anchored the Americans to a fourth straight women’s team epee title at the Pan Am Championships.

Hurley and teammates Katharine Holmes (Washington, D.C.), Amanda Sirico (Bowie, Md.) and Kelley Hurley (San Antonio, Texas) defeated Colombia, 27-18, in the quarter-finals and Argentina, 45-18, in the semis.

Fencing Venezuela for gold, Team USA built a 13-8 lead after the first four bouts and Courtney Hurley increased the squad’s momentum with an 11-3 run against Eliana Lugo in the fifth. With a 24-11 lead, Kelley Hurley gave up a single to Maria Martinez in the sixth and Holmes outscored Lizzie Assi, 6-3, in the seventh. Kelley picked up her final win of the day when she defeated Dayana Martinez, 4-3, in the penultimate bout. Up 34-18 at the start of the ninth, Hurley closed the match out for a 45-23 win.

Competition continues on Thursday with the following U.S. athletes competing in the women’s saber and men’s epee team events:
