Mariel Zagunis Named USOC Athlete of the Month After Double Medal Win at Senior Worlds

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Two-time Olympic Champion Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) has been honored by the U.S. Olympic Committee as the Female Athlete of the Month for July.

Zagunis won her fifth career individual medal at the Senior World Championships in Kazan, Russia on July 18 when the saber took silver to end the season as the No. 2-ranked fencer in the world. On July 21, she was back in action in the team saber competition. After three straight bronze medals at the Senior Worlds, Zagunis anchored Team USA to a gold medal – the first for the squad since 2005 and Zagunis’s third Senior World team title during her career.

Zagunis was selected for the award by a voting panel of media, members of the U.S. Olympic family and a Twitter vote that accounts for 10% of the vote total.
