(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Fifteen-year-olds Andrew Doddo (South Orange, N.J.) and Erwin Cai (Marietta, Ga.) earned the top two positions on the podium at the Godollo Saber Cadet European Cup in Hungary on Saturday.

Doddo won gold and Cai took silver in the second saber event of the Cadet European season.

Ranked seventh after two rounds of pools, Doddo’s first two direct elimination round wins came against a pair of British fencers – Samuel Rooney, 15-7, and Caspian Watt, 15-2.

After a 15-8 win against Martin Nagy (HUN), Doddo defeated Philippe Guy (San Diego, Calif.), 15-6, in the table of 16.

Doddo won his next bout against Raoul Bonah (GER), 15-9, to advance to the quarter-finals.

Cai went undefeated in both rounds of pools and earned a bye into the table of 64 as the top seed in the DE rounds.

Cai won his first bout against Ivan Mandov (BLR), 15-10, and defeated Alexander Holtmann (GER), 15-13, in the table of 32.

In the next two rounds, Cai defeated Russians Mark Stepanov and Konstantin Lokhanov by 15-11 and 15-12 scores, respectively.

Doddo and Cai’s teammate, Josef Cohen (Barrington, R.I.), won his first four direct elimination bouts, but lost his table of eight bout to Vladislav Pozdniakov (RUS), 15-12.

Cohen won his repechage bout against teammate Andrew Sun (Alpharetta, Ga.), 15-12, to qualify for the quarters.

Cai, the reigning Y14 National Champion, drew Cohen in the quarters and won the bout, 15-11.

Doddo defeated Botond Darko (HUN), 15-6, to qualify for the medal rounds.

In a rematch of their gold medal final at the Konin Cadet European Cup last month, Doddo fenced Anatoliy Kostenko (RUS) and won the bout, 15-9.

Cai defeated Pozdniakov in the other semi, 15-14, to set up an all-American final.

Doddo won the final bout, 15-3, to earn his second medal of the season after placing second in Konin.

The win allowed Doddo to retain his top position in the U.S. cadet standings and climb the rankings to No. 3 in the Cadet European standings.

On Sunday, Cohen, Dawson Sieradzky (Wayne, N.J.), Inti Farfan-Baterl (Morrison, Colo.) and Zachary Johnson (Lake Oswego, Ore.) fenced in the team event where the squad won bronze.
