U.S. Women’s Epee Team Finishes 10th in Legnano

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – The U.S. Women’s Epee Team rebounded from an opening round loss to finish 10th at the first World Cup of the season in Legnano, Italy on Sunday.

London Olympic bronze medalists Courtney and Kelley Hurley (San Antonio, Texas) and 2014 Senior World Team members Katharine Holmes (Washington, D.C.) and Anna Van Brummen (Houston, Texas) lost their first match by a touch to Israel in the table of 16, 42-41.

After a 35-28 win over Venezuela, Team USA defeated Korea, the 2012 Olympic silver medalists, by a score of 33-32 in the next match.

The Americans lost their final round of the day, 41-27, against Germany in the 9th – 10th place match.

On Saturday, Courtney Hurley and Natalie Vie (Phoenix, Ariz.) each fenced in the table of 64 in the individual event.

Hurley, who was exempt from the preliminary rounds as the ninth seed in the tournament, lost her bout against 2011 Senior World Team Champion Simona Gherman (ROU), 15-14.

Vie, who advanced to the table of 64 after two rounds of preliminary direct elimination bouts on Friday, lost to Marie Florence Candassamy (FRA), 15-9.
