In accordance with the FIE’s decision to extend the testing period for the saber on guard line rule, the USA Fencing Board of Directors voted to extend the testing period in the United States.

Per the motion passed by the Board: “In April 2016, the USA Fencing Board of Directors adopted the recommended FIE modifications for T 17 affecting the starting position of sabre fencers on the strip. Additional modifications made by the FIE during the test period, including extension of the test time period, will also be adopted by USA Fencing.”

The FIE voted during its Congress to extend the testing period through mid-February 2017.

Per the starting position rule: “When placed on guard during the bout, the distance between the two competitors must be such that, in the position ‘point in line,’ the points of the two blades cannot make contact.” The distance between the athletes will be set for 3 meters. The pistes will have markings accordingly.
