(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – The Road to Rio took a trip to Iceland over the weekend when 2015 Pan American Champion won a gold medal at the Reykjavik Men’s Saber Satellite Tournament.

Similar to World Cup and Grand Prix events, athletes can earn points at satellite tournaments towards their world ranking.

Dershwitz, who currently sits as No. 1 in the Adjusted Olympic Rankings, dropped a bout in the pool rounds, but still earned a bye into the table of 16 where he defeated 2012 Pan Am Champion Joseph Polossifakis (CAN), 15-13.

After a 15-11 win against Ricardo Alberto Bustamante (ARG), Dershwitz secured a position on the podium.

Dershwitz won his next two bouts against Venezuelan opponents to take gold as he defeated Abraham Rodriguez, 15-12, and Eliecer Romero, 15-9, in the semis and finals.

Thomas Kolasa (Princeton, N.J.) advanced from the pools to the table of 32, but lost to eventual bronze medalist Jesus Carvajal (VEN), 15-9.

In the women’s event on Saturday, Allison Dunlap (Redondo Beach, Calif.) advanced to the table of 32 where she defeated Kolfinna Jonsdottir (ISL), 15-11.

Dunlap finished 16th after a 15-5 loss in the next round to Pan Am Champion Maria Belen Perez Maurice (ARG).
