(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Seventy-three-year-old Davis Carvey (Seattle, Wash.) earned his best career result at the Veteran World Championships on Tuesday in Limoges, France.

Fencing in the +70 men’s foil event, Carvey finished the pools with a 3-2 record. Seeded 15th, Carvey earned a bye into the table of 32 where he defeated Michihiro Okudera (JPN), 15-8. Carvey won his next bout against 2012 Veteran World Champion Reinhard Munster (DEN), 8-7, to advance to the quarters.

In the next bout, Carvey lost to Gari Aftandilov (RUS), 10-6, who went on to win his 12th Veteran World title.

Carvey’s teammates, James Bricker (Ewing, N.J.) and John Rea (Wilmington, N.C.), each earned top-16 results.

Bricker defeated Brian Millo (GBR), 10-5, in the table of 32, but lost to 2001 Veteran World Champion Hans Visser (GER), 10-5, in the 16.  

Rea controlled his opening bout against 2006 Veteran World medalist Andras Bornemisza (GBR), winning the table of 32 by a 10-2 score. Rea lost his next bout, 10-4, to Aleksandr Anastasov (MKD) who went on to win bronze.

Joseph Cohen (Cape May Court House, N.J.) also competed, but was eliminated in the table of 32 after a 10-2 loss to Brian Causton (GBR).

In the 60-69 men’s foil competition, three members of Team USA earned top-16 finishes.

Joseph Streb (Columbus, Ohio) won his first bout against Paal Ramberg (DEN), 10-2, in the table of 32, but his bid for a third individual Vet World medal ended when he lost to eventual silver medalist Anthony Bartlett (GBR), 10-6. Bartlett also defeated U.S. Team member Thomas Lutton (Cupertino, Calif.), 10-2, in the 32.

Three-time Vet World Team member Philippe Bennett (New York City, N.Y.) opened with a strong win over five-time Vet World medalist Eiichi Ide (JPN), 8-3. In the table of 16, Bennett lost to six-time Vet World Champion Graham Paul (GBR), 10-6.

First-time Vet World Team member Henri Darricau (Littleton, Colo.) also advanced to the 16. Darricau defeated Socrate Abdoukadyrov (FRA), 10-5, in the 32, but lost to eventual champion Paul Wedge (GBR), 10-4.

In the women’s 50-59 epee competition, three members of Team USA advanced to the table of 16.

Three-time Veteran World Team member Cristina Ford (Salem, Ore.) was the only U.S. athlete to go undefeated in pools and earned the No. 3 seed in the table of 64 as well as a bye into the 32 where she defeated Karen Grant (GBR), 10-7. Ford’s next bout came down to the final touch with Myriam Malucelli (FRA) taking the win, 10-9.

Valerie Asher (Bethesda, Md.) returned to the Veteran Worlds for the first time since winning bronze in 2012 and opened the table of 32 with a 10-4 win against three-time Vet World Champion Jane Hutchinson (GBR). Asher narrowly missed the quarter-finals when she lost in the table of 16 by a 10-9 score to Sarah Osvath (AUS) who would go on to win gold.

Cristina Gordet (Somerville, Mass.), a bronze medalist at her first Vet Worlds in 2013, defeated Paula Soitiala (FIN), 10-7, in the 32, but lost to Franke Hohlbein (GER), 10-3.

Competing on her second Vet World Team, Ellen Finnegan (West Roxbury, Mass.) won her first bout in the table of 64 against Marina Trofimova (RUS) by a 10-4 score. In the table of 32, Finnegan lost to eventual bronze medalist Lena Tallroth-Kock (FIN), 10-3.
