USA Fencing

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – A delegation of more than 100 athletes nearly swept the gold medals in another dominant performance at the Pan American Youth and Veteran Championships, held from Aug. 22-28 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Team USA won 82 individual medals in 30 events.

The Americans won nine of 12 titles in the youth events with athletes competing in Y10 (Youth A) and Y14 (Youth B) events.

A pair of 10 year olds won gold and silver in the Youth A women’s epee competition with Yasmine Khamis (McKinney, Texas) and Leehi Machulsky (San Jose, Calif.) advancing to the final bout. Both athletes went undefeated in pools to earn the top two seeds in the table of 16. Khamis dominated each of her DE bouts, giving up just four touches in three rounds to advance to the gold medal final against her teammate. Machulsky pushed Khamis to the end with the title decided by just a point as Khamis earned the victory, 7-6.

Ten-year-old Susan Wiggers (Atlanta, Ga.) cruised through both her pool and direct elimination rounds in the Youth A women’s saber competition. Wiggers earned a bye into the quarter-finals as the top seed and posted a 10-0 shutout to make the medal rounds where she gave up just one touch each to Venezuelans Andrea Ojeda and Genesis Clemente in the semis and finals, respectively to win both bouts, 10-1.

Nine-year-old Ishani Sood (Los Gatos, Calif.) was nearly unstoppable in the Youth A women’s foil event, finishing pools as the top seed and holding her first two opponents to one touch a piece. Fencing as the only U.S. athlete in the top eight, Sood defeated Marina Reyes (PUR), 10-4, in the semis and posted a 10-2 win over Katiria Diaz (PUR) in the finals.

U.S. team members won all three weapons in the Youth A events as well.

In the Youth A men’s saber competition, Team USA locked down gold, silver and bronze. Nine-year-olds Carter Berrio (Lighthouse Point, Fla.) and Lukas Eichhorn (Atlanta, Ga.) finished the pools as the top two seeds while 10-year-old Kruz Schembri (Haines City, Fla.) also went undefeated to take the third seed in the DEs. All three athletes advanced to the semis where Schembri defeated Eichhorn, 10-9, and Berrio bested Emilio Vargas (COL), 10-4. In the finals, Berrio came out ahead against Schembri for a 10-4 win.

A trio of fencers from the Bay Area won three of the four Youth A men’s foil medals with 10-year-old Adam Chirashnya (San Jose, Calif.) taking gold while nine-year-old Renzo Fukuda (San Francisco, Calif.) and 10-year-old Anders Yu (Millbrae, Calif.) won bronze. Fukuda, Yu and Chirashnya went 1-2-3 out of pools with each athlete earning byes into the table of 16 and a pair of wins to make the semis. Chirashnya edged Yu, 10-9, to qualify for the finals, but Fukuda missed a chance at gold after a 7-4 loss to Manuel Reyes (PUR). Chirashnya dominated the final with a 10-2 victory over Reyes.

The Youth A men’s epee event came down to teammates Ankith Prasad (San Antonio, Texas) and Imra Zakariya Latif (Lemoore, Calif.) in the finals. While nine-year-old Latif went undefeated to finish first out of pools, Prasad dropped one of his four bouts to enter the direct elimination rounds as the sixth seed. Prasad won his semi bout against Juan David Castillo Cardona (COL), 8-2, to qualify for a chance at gold against Latif who won his semi against Eduardo Goncalves (BRA), 10-5. It was Prasad who would come away the victor, however, defeating his teammate, 10-3, in the finals.

In the Youth B men’s events, Team USA won two of three titles with athletes advancing to the final bout in every event. .

Fourteen-year-old Trenton Schmitt (Granite Bay, Calif.) led the U.S. squad to three medals in the Youth B men’s saber competition in a field where six of the top eight fencers were from the United States. Unfortunately, all six athletes would fence U.S. teammates and the draw meant that only three athletes would advance to the medal rounds. In the semis, fifth seeded Schmitt defeated Leighton Priest (Pontiac, Mich.) – a 13-year-old who was seeded ninth – by a score of 15-6. Thirteen-year-old Justin Bonsell (Dallas, Texas) finished third out of pools and held off Matiz Rios (ARG) for a 15-14 win as the highest seeded U.S. fencer left in the table. Schmitt, the reigning Y14 National Champion, controlled the final and defeated his teammate, 15-7, to win gold.

A bronze medalist as a Youth A epee fencer at this event in 2014, 13-year-old Ethan Kushernik (Brooklyn, N.Y.) missed the podium last year, but returned to the Pan Ams to take gold in Puerto Rico. Kushnerik finished pools ranked third – one position behind his teammate, 14-year-old Justin Haddad (Bethesda, Md.) The two would meet for the first time in the semis where Kushnerik outscored his teammate, 15-14, before winning the final over Lucio Perez On Darts (ARG), 15-11.

Team USA won two medals in the Youth B men’s foil competition with 12-year-old Lucas Lutar (Brewster, N.Y.) and 13-year-old Andrew Chung (Yorba Linda, Calif.) taking silver and bronze, respectively. Both athletes fell to Cesar Colon (PUR) who defeated Chung, 15-11, in the semis and Lutar, 15-13, in the finals.

The U.S. boasted two Youth B women’s foil fencers in the final when 12-year-old Katherine Apelian (Boonton, N.J.) and 14-year-old Gabriela Kokes (Manasquan, N.J.) each won three direct elimination bouts to fence for gold. While both athletes held their opponents to single digit scores in their early rounds, the bout between teammates would be close throughout with Apelian claiming gold with a 15-12 win.

In the Youth B women’s saber competition, a pair of 12-year-olds would represent Team USA on the podium. Natalie Cashman (Prairie Village, Kans.) advanced to the semis where she would fence her teammate Chloe Williams (Atlanta, Ga.) Seeded No. 2 to Williams’s No. 3, Cashman took the win, 15-10, but lost her final bout to Veoloso Espinosa (ARG), 15-8.

Thirteen-year-old Andrea Leang (Sunnyvale, Calif.) represented the United States on the Youth B women’s epee podium with a silver medal win. The top seed after the pool rounds, Leang won three straight bouts by 15-8 margins, but lost her final to Karina Dyner (CRC), 15-9.

In the veteran events, multi-weapon fencer Debra Allen (Ashland, Ore.) won three gold medals. At 62 years old, Allen not only fenced in her own age group (Veteran 2 for ages 60+), but she also entered events in the Pre-Veteran (40-49) and Veteran 1 (50-59) events as well. Allen won gold in both the Veteran 1 and Veteran 2 women’s epee events as well as the Veteran 2 women’s saber competition.

In the Veteran 1 women’s epee competition, Allen didn’t give up more than four touches to any opponent to qualify for the finals where she defeated Maria Puga (ARG), 10-3. Her teammate, Jeannine Prokop (Herndon, Va.), came home with the bronze.

Allen would dominate the Veteran 2 women’s epee event as well. Allen defeated Rachel El Saleh (Houston, Texas), 10-2, in the semis and Gladys Berardi (Long Valley, N.J.), 10-5, for gold. Janice Midgley (Tinton Falls, N.J.), a 2015 Veteran World medalist, finished with the bronze.

As a saber fencer, Allen would fence two Veteran World medalists to win Veteran 2 gold against a list of tough U.S. competitors. Again, Allen would be seeded first out of pools and she won her first DE bout, 10-4, against Ellen O’Leary (Decatur, Ga.), a two-time individual Veteran World Champion in the +70 event. Allen’s final bout came down to the last touch where she outscored 2015 Veteran World medalist Jude Offerle (Winnetka, Ill.), 10-9. Berardi rounded out the podium for Team USA with a bronze.

While she missed gold in the Veteran 2 women’s saber event, Offerle won a pair of golds in Veteran 1 competition. The 64-year-old bested competitors in both the foil and saber events in the younger age group.

In the Veteran 1 women’s saber event, Offerle defeated Esperanza Alzona (Frederick, Md.), 10-1, in the semis. Offerle would fence O’Leary for gold after O’Leary’s 10-4 win in the other semi over second seeded Berardi. In the finals, Offerle defeated her Vet World teammate, 10-3.

Offerle would fence her 2014 Veteran World teammate, Lynette Whitt (Owings, Md.) in the finals of the Veteran 1 women’s saber competition. Offerle edged Whitt, 3-2, to win gold while Alessandra Brunelli (Bluffton S.C.) and Nora Gutkovskaya (Fair Lawn, N.J.) took bronze.

The final bout between Offerle and Whitt was their second final in 24 hours after Whitt won their Veteran 2 women’s foil final, 10-6, with Berardi and Gutkovskaya each winning bronze.

A gold medalist at the April NAC as a Vet 40 women’s foil fencer, Malsun Marletto (Jewett City, Conn.) won gold in the Pre-Veteran foil competition in Puerto Rico, defeating Allison Thurman (Gaithersburg, Md.), 10-4, for gold. Claire Lee (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Teodora Stanica (Fremont, Calif.) finished with bronze.

After winning silver at the 2015 Pan Am Veteran Championships, Kelly Dewsnup (Provo, Utah) won gold in the Pre-Veteran women’s foil event, leading another U.S. podium sweep with a 10-7 final victory over Natalia Oblonsky (New York City, N.Y.) as Claire Lee (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Debra Allen won bronze.

Michele Chimienti (Temple City, Calif.) also followed a 2015 Pan Am bronze with a gold medal when she defeated Maria Puga (ARG) in the finals. Her teammate, Rosanna Lacarra (Carlsbad, Calif.), won bronze.

In the men’s events, four-time Veteran World Team member Charles Alexander (Escondido, Calif.) won his third straight Pan Am Veteran title in the Veteran 2 men’s epee competition where he defeated two-time Veteran World Team member Frank Hewitt (Jamul, Calif.), 10-9, in the finals. David Drake (San Diego, Calif.) completed the U.S. trio on the podium with a bronze. 

Eleven-time Veteran World Team member Thomas Lutton (Cupertino, Calif.) defeated Fernando Lupiz (ARG), 10-7, in the Veteran 2 men’s foil competition final. His former Vet World teammate Philippe Bennett (New York City, N.Y.) won bronze alongside Stephen Gross (Fairfax, Va.) who won silver as a Pre-Veteran fencer in 2015.

Vincent Paragano (Bernardsville, N.J.), a 2015 Veteran Pan Am bronze medalist, rounded out the U.S. sweep of the Veteran 2 men’s and women’s titles with his gold medal in the men’s saber event. Paragano defeated Alfredo Ovalles (VEN), 10-7. His teammates, Rick Brown (Watchung, N.J.) and Thomas Lauzon (Alexandria, Va.) won bronze.

In the Pre-Veteran men’s saber competition, Sean Bates (Gastonia, N.C.) led a U.S. sweep of all four medals. Kristian Anderson (Lincoln, Neb.) and Bates entered the DE tables as the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds respectively and the gold medal would come down to the two teammates. Bates won the final, 10-8, to earn the title with Michael Bacon (New York City, N.Y.) and Mario Martinez (Fremont, Calif.) winning bronze.

Anderson reached the podium in the Pre-Veteran men’s foil event as well where he took silver, dropping only one bout to Roberto Lazzarini (BRA), 10-6, who won three gold medals over the course of the championships. In the previous round, Lazzarini defeated Rolando Balboa (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who finished with a bronze.

While Lazzarini also won the Pre-Veteran men’s epee title, two U.S. fencers stood on the podium as Creston Bailey (Escondido, Calif.) and Kenneth Hagan (Louisville, Ky.) each took bronze.

Team USA took a three-medal finish in the Veteran 1 men’s epee event. Greerson McMullen (Atlanta, Ga.) missed gold after a final loss to Giacom Guarnera (BRA). In addition to McMullen’s silver, his teammates, Chris Balestracci (Guilford, Conn.) and Michael Lipton (San Rafael, Calif.), took bronze for Team USA.

McMullen returned to the podium again in the Veteran 1 men’s foil competition, this time claiming bronze. His teammate, Don Davis (Patomac, Md.), took silver after a 10-8 loss in the finals to Lazzarini.

The Veteran 1 men’s saber event also featured a multi-American finish as Steven Heck (Laurel, Md.) won silver, ahead of his bronze medalist teammates Michael Bacon (New York City, N.Y.) and Ray Howard Blair (Naples, Fla.) Heck fenced Venezuelan Alfredo Ovalles (VEN) in the finals, but lost the bout, 10-6.
