(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – For the fourth straight season, Absolute Fencing Gear® will return as the title sponsor of an FIE Grand Prix event on U.S. soil.
Held from March 16-18, 2018, the Foil Grand Prix will be named the Absolute Fencing Gear® FIE Grand Prix Anaheim and will feature more than 300 of the world’s best fencers competing in one of the most prestigious fencing events ever to take place in the United States.
The tournament will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center with finals to take place for both men and women on the 18th and the preliminary rounds being held on the 16th and 17th.
“Absolute Fencing is very excited to be back as the title sponsor for the 2018 Grand Prix in Anaheim and we are looking forward to see the world's finest men's and women's foilists gathering together and competing in Anaheim in March,” said Absolute Fencing Gear Owner Gary Lu (Bridgewater, N.J.) “Absolute Fencing has been partnering with USA Fencing since 2012 and continuing to support bringing international events to the United States is a key part of helping to grow fencing throughout the U.S. and around the world.”
The Grand Prix will be highlighted by Olympic and World medalists with the U.S. lineup expected to include the following athletes:
In 2017, the Absolute Fencing Gear® FIE Grand Prix was held in Long Beach, Calif., marking the first time a foil Grand Prix was held in the United States in more than a decade.
Kiefer won the women’s event and made history as the first U.S. woman ever to earn a World No. 1 ranking in foil while Massialas earned the silver medal in the men’s competition.
Team USA is expected to include at least seven past Grand Prix medal winners and will be strong contenders for podium finishes in Anaheim where the Americans will compete against fencers from more than 30 nations, including Italy, Russia, Japan, France, Korea and more.
“Absolute Fencing Gear® has been such a great partner to work with over the past five years. Gary Lu and Amanda Ronning have provided amazing support to USA Fencing in the past and we’re looking forward to continuing this partnership in Anaheim,” said USA Fencing Executive Director Kris Ekeren (Littleton, Colo.) “USA Fencing is honored to host a Grand Prix again and this season’s tournament will be an excellent opportunity for fencing fans to see Team USA go for the gold against many of the athletes who will be competing in Tokyo less than three years from now.”
