Eliza Stone will fence Sofia Pozdniakova (RUS) in the Senior World Championships semifinals.

(Wuxi, China) – Eliza Stone (Chicago, Ill.) will win Team USA’s first medal in women’s saber since 2014 tonight when she does battle with Russia for a chance at World Championship gold.

Stone will be the only non-Russian on the podium as the nation that won the individual and team titles at the 2016 Olympic Games put three fencers into the semifinals.

Stone’s podium finish will mark the third individual medal of the Senior World Championships after Eli Dershwitz (Sherborn, Mass.) won silver in men’s saber and Courtney Hurley (San Antonio, Texas) won bronze in women’s epee on Sunday.

A 2014 Senior World Champion in the team event, this marks Stone’s best individual result at the Senior Worlds since she placed 10th in 2015.

She will take on 2017 European Junior Champion Sofia Pozdniakova in the semifinals.

The winner will fence the victor of an all-star battle between two-time Senior World Champion Sofya Velikaya and 2016 Olympic Champion Yana Egorian.

Competition begins at 6:30 p.m. Beijing Time (6:30 a.m. Eastern).

Bouts will be streamed live at
