Olympians and Paralympians Go for NAC Gold in Milwaukee This Weekend

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – The 2018-19 North American Cup circuit begins this weekend in Milwaukee, Wis. at the Wisconsin Center with nearly 1,900 fencers competing over four days.

Competition will be held in Division I, Division II, wheelchair and cadet (U17) events for all three weapons – epee, foil and saber. The tournament begins daily at 8 a.m. and concludes at approximately 9 p.m.

Tournament Schedule, Seeding and Live Results

The first tournament of the season will serve as the first competition since the 2018 Senior Worlds for Senior National Team members who are preparing for the international circuit which kicks off in November.

Nine of the 14 U.S. athletes who won medals at the 2018 Senior World Championships will be competing in Milwaukee, including:

  • Gerek Meinhardt (San Francisco, Calif. / Men’s Foil), 2016 Olympic team bronze medalist and five-time Senior World medalist
  • Miles Chamley-Watson (New York City, N.Y. / Men’s Foil), 2016 Olympic team bronze medalist and four-time Senior World medalist
  • Race Imboden (New York City, N.Y. / Men’s Foil), 2016 Olympic team bronze medalist and three-time Senior World team medalist
  • Courtney Hurley (San Antonio, Texas / Women’s Epee), 2012 Olympic team bronze medalist and two-time Senior World medalist
  • Kelley Hurley (San Antonio, Texas / Women’s Epee), 2012 Olympic team bronze medalist and 2018 Senior World Team Champion
  • Nzingha Prescod (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Women’s Foil), two-time Olympian and two-time Senior World medalist
  • Kat Holmes (Washington, D.C. / Women’s Epee), 2016 Olympian and 2018 Senior World Team Champion
  • Amanda Sirico (Bowie, Md. / Women’s Epee), 2018 Senior World Team Champion
  • Eliza Stone (Chicago, Ill. / Women’s Saber), 2018 Senior World bronze medalist

Following the conclusion of the Division I women’s epee gold medal final on Saturday (approximately 4:30 p.m.) 2018 Senior World Team Champions Kelley Hurley, Courtney Hurley, Kat Holmes and Amanda Sirico will be signing autographs. The first 50 fans will receive a limited edition U.S. Women’s Epee Team World Champion poster.

Other Olympic and Senior World medalists fencing in Milwaukee include:

  • Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore. / Women’s Saber), two-time Olympic and five-time Senior World Champion
  • Daryl Homer (Bronx, N.Y. / Men’s Saber), 2016 Olympic silver medalist and 2015 Senior World silver medalist
  • Ysaora Thibus (FRA / Women’s Foil), 2016 Olympian and seven-time Senior World medalist
  • Soren Thompson (New York City, N.Y. / Men’s Epee), two-time Olympian and 2012 Senior World Team Champion
  • Ben Bratton (New York City, N.Y. / Men’s Epee), 2012 Senior World Team Champion

The wheelchair competition will include both new and veteran fencers with five-time Paralympian and two-time World Champion Curtis Lovejoy (College Park, Ga.) highlighting the field.

Admission to the tournament is $5 per day or $15 for the four-day tournament. Children ages 10 and under will be admitted free. Tickets are available at the door or online at https://usafencingoctobernac.eventbrite.com.
