In an effort to recognize outstanding coaching within USA Fencing, we would like to announce applications/nominations for two awards: The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Developmental Coach of the Year Award and the USOC “Doc” Counsilman Science Award. The deadline for submission for each award is 11:59 p.m. MDT on Wednesday, October 24, 2018.

2018 Developmental Coach of the Year Application

2018 Doc Counsilman Award Application

The USOC Developmental Coach of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding coach of a youth club, school, or junior-level coach, or a coach directly responsible for coaching athletes to the junior and/or elite level. This award is based on the accomplishments from January 1, 2018 through September 1, 2018. The nominee must currently be coaching or within the first year of retirement as a coach. The developmental coach’s application should address the following areas: record/performance of athletes; service to their sport; coaching character; coaching honors received; service to their community; honors/recognition of the coach’s athletes.

The “Doc” Counsilman Award is for a coach that utilizes scientific techniques/equipment as an integral part of his/her coaching methods, or has created innovative ways to use sport science which includes biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, technology, strength and conditioning, and exercise physiology.  The coach’s application should address the integration of sport science, impact on performance, coaching honors received, and contribution to the sport of fencing.

To be eligible for either award, the coach must be a current Coach or +Coach member of USA Fencing in good standing and currently coaching or within one year of retirement as a coach. USA Fencing Coach Resource Team and National Team Coaches will review the applicants/nominees and nominate one person for each award to the USOC. The USOC will then select the USOC Developmental Coach of the Year and “Doc” Counsilman Science Award recipients from all the nominees from all the Olympic affiliated sports. USA Fencing reserves the right to withhold a nomination for the Science Award if it deems that the standards for the award were not met.

To apply or nominate someone for either honor, please complete the appropriate form and submit it to Sam Callan (s.callan@usafencing.org) no later than 11:59 p.m. MDT October 24, 2018. Please put the name of the award in the subject line.
