(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Forty-four U.S. athletes will represent Team USA this week at the Junior and Cadet Pan American Championships in Bogota, Colombia.

Junior and Cadet Pan American Championships Live Results

The six-day tournament will begin on Tuesday and conclude on Sunday with events being held in the junior individual, junior team and cadet individual categories.

Last year, Team USA won gold medals in the junior men’s and women’s épée, men’s and women’s foil and men’s saber team events to earn valuable world ranking points in the final tournament to determine seeding for the Junior and Cadet World Championships next month in Torun, Poland.

Team USA will be led by past Junior and Cadet World medalists in each weapon, including:

  • Chloe Fox-Gitomer (Portland, Ore. / Junior Women’s Saber), 2018 Junior World team silver medalist
  • Tori Johnson (Peachtree City, Ga. / Junior Women’s Saber), 2018 Junior World team silver medalist
  • Mitchell Saron (Ridgewood, N.J. / Junior Men’s Saber), 2018 Junior World team bronze medalist
  • Kamar Skeete (Duluth, Ga. / Junior Men’s Saber), 2018 Junior World team bronze medalist
  • Greta Candreva (Katonah, N.Y. / Junior and Cadet Women’s Épée), 2017 Junior World team bronze medalist
  • Kenji Bravo (San Francisco, Calif. / Junior Men’s Foil), 2018 Cadet World Champion
  • Alexis Anglade (Alpharetta, Ga. / Junior Women's Saber), 2018 Cadet World silver medalist
  • Christopher Walker (Atlanta, Ga. / Junior Men’s Saber), 2017 Cadet World silver medalist
  • Jonathan Piskovatskov (Houston, Texas / Junior Men’s Épée), 2017 Cadet World bronze medalist

For Team USA’s men’s and women’s saber and men’s foil events, the tournament also will serve as the final qualifier for the 2019 Junior World Championship Team.

Two members of the junior women’s saber team that won silver at the 2018 Junior Worlds, Fox-Gitomer and Johnson, have both clinched their spots on the 2019 Junior World Team due to previous results earlier in the season. Fox-Gitomer won bronze at the 2017 Junior Pan Ams, but both she and Johnson ended the 2018 event with top-eight finishes. This year, they are expected to each be contenders for the top spot on the podium. Nora Burke (New York City, N.Y.) clinched her position on her first Junior World Team at the Junior Olympic Championships last week and will not be in Colombia, but 2018 Cadet World Team Ryan Jenkins (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Alexis Anglade (Alpharetta, Ga.) are each eligible for the fourth position on Team USA with a top result in Bogota. Jenkins sits in fourth in the Junior National Team Point Standings with Anglade in fifth.

The Junior Men’s Foil Team has one position open with both No. 4 Marcello Olivares (Cooper City, Fla.) and No. 6 Ashton Daniel (Cupertino, Calif.) scheduled to compete in Bogota. Bravo, who is aiming to repeat his 2018 Junior Pan Am title has secured his position on a second Junior World team alongside Notre Dame sophomore Nick Itkin (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Harvard sophomore Geoffrey Tourette (Cupertino, Calif.) Bravo compete in Bogota alongside Olivares, Daniel and Ethan Gassner (San Francisco, Calif.)

Three of the four members of the four U.S. fencers who have mathematically locked their positions on the men’s saber Junior World Team will be competing in Bogota. Saron, Skeete and Walker secured their positions on the 2019 squad at the conclusion of the Dourdan Junior World Cup in France on Feb. 16. All three fencers competed at the 2018 Junior Pan Ams where Walker and Saron won silver and bronze. Saron and Skeete were both on the 2018 Junior World Team that won bronze with Walker earning silver at the 2017 Cadet Worlds. Harvard junior Erwin Cai (Atlanta, Ga.) earned the fourth position on Team USA, but will not be competing in Bogota. Andrew Johnson (Ridgewood, N.J.), a 2017 Cadet Pan Am Team member, will compete on his first Junior Pan Am squad after winning silver as a cadet at the Junior Olympics in Denver.
