As the new season kicks off, seven fencers brought home a gold medal creating lots of excitement and memories.

ORLANDO, Fl. -  The 2023-24 season officially kicked off with the October North American Cup held in Orlando, Florida from October 26-30. Seven fencers finished the day with a gold medal starting the new season strong.

There was lots of excitement at the first NAC of the season, celebrating victories and milestones. Tareq Alqallaf (Zeljkovic Fencing Academy) celebrated his gold medal win in Parafencing Men’s Epee as he tallied his 64th medal at a USA Fencing tournament.

Gabriel McCarthy (Tim Morehouse Fencing Club) not only celebrated his win with a gold medal but gave shoutouts to his family, friends, and club after winning Division II Men’s Saber. “You train with me, help me get better, we grow together. Anyone who has ever helped me I just wanna thank!”

Jataya Taylor (Denver Fencing Center / Denver Fencing Foundation) took home gold in the Parafencing Women’s Epee competition. It was a new experience for Taylor as she only started fencing a year and a half ago and it was the first time she had ever fenced against her opponent in competition, Shelby Jensen (Valkyrie Fencing Club).

She said “It was a learning curve itself, we both definitely came in not knowing what to expect,” when talking about fencing Jensen. “It was a great way to get started because I look up to her, I have learned a lot from her.”

The Division I Women’s Saber gold medal was earned by Elizabeth Tartakovsky (Manhattan Fencing Center). Tartakovsky started her day off with a bit of nerves, and simply needed to calm down to make her adjustments throughout the day. Now that the Olympic qualification period has started off strong for Tartakovsky, next up is the first world cup, and to “keep getting better.”
