A long time ago in a fencing club far, far away from Summer Nationals, Sophia Schiminovich’s mom took her Star Wars-loving daughter to her first fencing lesson. That investment paid off Saturday when Schiminovich became the 2022 Y-14 women’s saber national champion.

Jennette Starks-Faulkner hadn’t fenced in 12 years when she got a call from her friend and frequent on-the-strip rival Anne-Marie Walters. That phone call relaunched Starks-Faulkner’s fencing career and has now led to a 2022 national championship.

Twelve years after he started fencing at age 72, Bianchini is still coming back to the strip. And he’s still winning. On Tuesday in Minneapolis, he walked away with another gold medal and a national title — this time in Vet-80 men’s saber.
