(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – USA Fencing will sanction nearly 100 regional tournaments throughout the nation when the 2020-21 regional events season begins on Oct. 1.
Following the cancellation of regional and national events at the conclusion of the 2019-20 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, competition will resume on the regional circuit over the course of three months with a multi-phase approach designed to reintroduce competition in a safe manner.
After the opening of local tournaments on Aug. 1 as Phase 1 of the Return to Events, regional competition will begin in October with Regional Youth Circuit and Regional Junior and Cadet Circuit events followed by Regional Open Circuit events in November as Phase 2. During Phase 2, athletes will be allowed to compete in their home region only. Phase 3 will begin on Dec. 1 with the start of the Super Youth Circuit and Super Junior and Cadet Circuit seasons followed by the start of national events no earlier than Jan. 1, 2021 during Phase 4.
The 2020-21 calendar includes 11 SYC and 20+ ROC events previously announced in February. All tournament organizers awarded tournaments for the 2020-21 season were offered the ability to hold tournaments beginning in October.
More than 50 RJCCs and RYCs also were awarded to organizers throughout the nation. Nearly 60 tournament organizers from 21 states, including clubs and divisions, were awarded regional events throughout the nation.
All regional events will be compliant with local, state and federal guidelines regarding restrictions on the size of gatherings, allowance for sports events, etc. Should any tournaments be cancelled after the start of registration, athletes will be granted refunds. USA Fencing also is working with regional tournament organizers to implement a process with which to conduct registration when maximum event sizes are implemented in order to be in compliance with local, state and federal guidelines.
