Jasmine McGlade completed her comeback by winning gold on the third day of the 2025 USA Fencing National Championships and July Challenge in Milwaukee.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — After almost a decade away from the sport, Jasmine McGlade (Northern Colorado Fencers) began the steady climb back into fencing about a year ago.

And on Monday, the former Division I-A, Junior, Cadet and NCAA national champion reached her latest mountaintop moment: the Vet-40 Women’s Epee national championship, one of 11 gold medals awarded on Monday, the third day of the 2025 Summer Nationals

“I'm just unbelievably grateful,” she says. “I feel like these moments, honestly, are just like a celebration of all of the hard work that you've done, all of the therapy sessions where I was like, ‘why am I coming back to the sport? What am I doing?’ The sacrifice involved. I really wanted this so badl.”

McGlade, like many Vet fencers, has to find time for fencing in her busy life — career, family, social life and more.

“It's just a lot to juggle this, and at the end of the day, I absolutely love this sport,” she says. “The feelings of a win like this are what make it really worth it. So I'm just unbelievably happy.”

Sandra Marchant (Rogue Fencing Academy & The Phoenix Center) completed her own comeback on Monday. An injury had forced her to take two months off from fencing.

“I honestly didn't think I would get this far today,” she says. “I really haven't trained other than a little bit with [coach] Eric [Soyka] in a chair, yeah? And if it wasn't for my whole team getting me here, this would never have even happened. So it was a delight to even get as far as I did.”

Marchant’s next stop: the 2025 Veteran Fencing World Championships, where she’ll hope to use lessons learned from last year’s Worlds in Dubai — and from training in Europe the past two summers.

Vet Worlds is a unique competition because, unlike in Cadets, Juniors and Seniors, the competitors typically don’t see one another throughout the season. That makes opportunities like her European training session extra useful.

“I've learned a little bit more about how they fence, what they do, and their habits,” she says. “So I feel like bringing that with me is gonna help me in training.”

While reflecting on her national title, Valerie Asher (DC Fencers Club) praised the veteran fencers who have created an outstanding community within the fencing world.

“The vets really have a strong sense of community,” she says. “It's a very welcoming community. It also offers you an incredible opportunity to age in the healthiest possible way.”

She reflected on the friends she’s had in fencing for 20-plus years.

“But there are also people that, you know, I go to a tournament, it's in a far off place and we hang out, we have a great time,” she says. “And, you know, now we're friends.”
