Gold Start Program
A new gold scarf or tie will identify under‑18 referees as developing officials and invite the fencing community’s patience, respect, and thanks.
In fencing, referees wear suits, not stripes — and now, some will add a new touch of gold. Beginning this season, referees under 18 will wear a gold scarf or tie to signal to the community that they are the next generation of officials, stepping confidently onto the strip.
Inspired by USA Hockey’s Green Armband initiative, USA Fencing’s new Gold Start Program honors and supports developing referees who are just beginning what we hope will be a lifelong journey in our sport.
The message is simple: gold means growth. A scarf or tie identifies a young referee who is still learning, and it reminds athletes, coaches, and spectators alike that we all share responsibility for helping them succeed. That means asking questions at the right times, voicing concerns respectfully through proper channels, and keeping coaching focused on athletes — not officials.
Why does this matter? Without referees, there are no bouts. Today’s Gold Start officials could become tomorrow’s FIE-rated referees across foil, epee, and saber. This program builds their confidence, sharpens judgment through real-world experience, and strengthens the pipeline of skilled, passionate officials.
FAQ's Section:
Who qualifies for this program?
Any USA Fencing referee under the age of 18 who holds at least one rating — including P ratings — is automatically included.
Do I need to apply?
No application is required! USA Fencing reviews the system at the start of each month to identify new referees who qualify. Anyone meeting the requirements will automatically be added to the program and sent a Tie or Scarf
How will I receive my tie or scarf?
USA Fencing will mail all ties or scarfs directly to each referee who qualifies.
When will it arrive?
The first wave of ties and scarves will be sent out at the end of September and should reach referees by mid-late October.
What if I qualify but haven’t received mine?
If you believe you’re eligible but haven’t received your tie or scarf, please contact referees@usafencing.org. Keep in mind that the system is reviewed monthly, so if you’ve just earned your first rating, your tie or scarf will be sent the following month.
When should I wear it?
Referees are strongly encouraged to wear their tie or scarf anytime they officiate at local or regional events.
To every young referee in a gold scarf or tie: thank you for stepping up. And to the fencing family around you: when you see that flash of gold, remember you’re looking at the future of our sport — let’s help it shine.
