Epee in Krakow and Barcelona: Gold and Bronze Medals for U.S. Cadets; Seniors Make Top Ranks

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Feb. 11-13, 2022—Team USA cadet and senior epeeists took to the strips in Krakow, Poland and Barcelona, Spain this weekend, with some excellent results including gold and two bronzes for the cadets.  

Barcelona Women’s Epee World Cup

Margherita Guzzi Vincenti (Ataba Fencing Club) took sixth place at the 45th “International Ciutat de Barcelona” Women’s Epee World Cup in Barcelona, Spain, and Team USA took seventh place. Top 16 finishers included Isis Washington (15, Peter Westbrook Foundation) and Charlene Kai Yan Liu (16, New York Athletic Club). The competition took place at the Institut Nacional d’Educació Fisica de Catalunya (INEFC), site of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic and Paralympic Games, with 269 women’s epeeists and 28 teams participating.

Guzzi Vincenti fenced her way into the quarterfinals of individual women’s epee after winning against Italy’s Giulia Rizzi by a single touch, 15-14, followed by a 15-10 loss to Russia’s Aizanat Murtazaeva. Washington overcame Peru’s Maria Luisa Doig Calderon in the 32, 15-10, before Murtazaeva won against her, also, in the 16, 15-14. Liu defeated teammate Ketki Ketkar (23, Kaizen Academy LLC) in the 32, 12-11, before losing in the 16 to the ultimate gold medallist, Sera Song (KOR), 15-6.

Other finishers included Anna Van Brummen (19, Alliance Fencing Academy), Hadley Husisian (22, Fencing Sports Academy, Inc.), Anne Cebula (49, Fencers Club Inc.), Katharine Holmes (68, New York Athletic Club), Catherine Nixon (92, Peter Westbrook Foundation) and Faith Park (93, DC Fencers Club).

In the women’s team epee event, USA (Vincenti Guzzi, Holmes, Husisian, Van Brummen) made the top-eight after winning against Turkey in the 32, 45-20 and then Switzerland in the 16, 45-36, before falling to Italy in the quarterfinals by one point, 30-29.

Krakow Cadet Men’s and Women’s Epee

At the Cadet “Wawel Dragon Trophy 2022” Epee event in Krakow, Poland, Peyton Young (Alliance Fencing Academy) won a bronze medal with Rishi Shiv (Alliance Fencing Academy) taking eighth place in the men’s event. Kyle Fallon (Fencing Academy of Westchester) won the women’s gold medal with Sarah Gu (Medeo Fencing Club) scoring a bronze along with Alexandra Drovetsky (Medeo Fencing Club) taking fifth and Lauren McCutchen (Alliance Fencing Academy) taking eighth places. In all, 274 men and 247 women competed in the event.

Young beat Ukraine’s Lev Maistrenko in the quarterfinals of cadet men’s epee to make the medal round, 15-9, before being eliminated by Israel’s Alon Sarid in the semifinals, 15-10. Sarid also beat Shiv in the quarterfinals, 15-6.

Fallon won the cadet women’s epee gold medal by a single touch, 15-14, defeating Estonia’s Dinara Anis in the final match. Fallon won against her teammate, Gu, in the semifinals, 14-13.

Other finishers in men’s cadet epee included Joseph Wu (10, Cavalier Fencing Club), Ryan Jeyoon (15, Elite Fencing Academy (VA)), Alexander Liu (19, Alliance Fencing Academy), Nicholas Jin (37, Fortune Fencing), Kozmo Rhyu (49, Penta Olympic Fencing Club), Ajit Sivakumar (53, Cardinal Fencing Academy), Konstantin Vaysbukh (55, Long Island Fencing Center), Daniel Gao (58, Medeo Fencing Club), Logan Gatza (62, Elite Fencing Academy), Samuel Imrek (65, Alliance Fencing Academy), Christopher Chong (72T, Penta Olympic Fencing Club), Max Zhu (74, TeamK Fencing), Dayus Gohel (90, Olympia Fencing Center), Maximilian Shah (92T, Olympia Fencing Center), Shwan Lee (101, Elite Fencing Academy), Luka Loncar (108, Olympia Fencing Center) and Ian Goldfine (127, New York Fencing Academy).

Other finishers in women’s cadet epee included Leehi Machulsky (10, Academy of Fencing Masters), Yasmine Khamis (13, Alliance Fencing Academy), Michelle Lee (19, Alliance Fencing Academy), Sharika Gajjala (23, Medeo Fencing Club), Victoria Kuznetsov (25, Lilov Fencing Academy), Isabella Chin (26, New York Fencing Academy), Elizabeth Zigalo (28, New York Fencing Academy), Zoe Kim (33, Swords Fencing Studio), Tallulah Nguyen (34, Swords Fencing Studio), Ashley Luo (41, Olympia Fencing Center), Ava Wade-Currie (42, Olympia Fencing Center), Anya Mehrotra (44, Alliance Fencing Academy), Amy Mao (47, Medeo Fencing Club), Katie Lin (69, Medeo Fencing Club), Christina Liu (104, Alliance Fencing Academy) and Sophia Jakel (115, DC Fencers Club).
