Team USA Fencers Make Top 8, 16 results at FIE Saber World Cups in Budapest, Istanbul

Budapest and Istanbul, March 18-20—Two saber FIE World Cups took place this past weekend, with Team USA men’s and women’s individual and team fencers winning several top-8 and top-16 results.

At the Budapest Men’s Saber World Cup, Daryl Homer (Peter Westbrook Foundation) scored a top-8 result in the individual men’s event, finishing in seventh place after defeating teammate Eli Dershwitz (10, Tim Morehouse Fencing Club) in the quarterfinals by a touch, 15-14. Homer then faced Korean world champion Junghwan Kim, who won the match 15-5 before advancing to take a bronze medal.

Specifically named the “Gerevich-Kovács-Kárpáti” Individual World Cup and “Zarándi Csaba” Team World Cup, the overall event included 204 individual fencers and 23 teams and took place at the Budapest’s BOK Hall (formerly SYMA Hall).

Other Team USA results at the Budapest Men’s Saber World Cup included Andrew Mackiewicz (26, Zeta Fencing), Mitchell Saron (29, Bergen Fencing Club), Khalil Thompson (36, Peter Westbrook Foundation), Grant Williams (47, Durkan Fencing Academy), Noah Te Velde (67, Peter Westbrook Foundation), Kamar Skeete (104, Manhattan Fencing Center), Andrew Doddo (124, Fencers Club Inc.) and Zaheer Booth (126, Peter Westbrook Foundation).

In the men’s saber team event, USA (Eli Dershwitz, Daryl Homer, Andrew Mackiewicz, Mitchell Saron) took sixth place, defeating Canada in the round of 16, 45-40. This was followed by Germany winning its way against the USA team by a single point in the quarterfinals, 45-44, to ultimately advance to the bronze medal.

At the Istanbul Women’s Saber World Cup, Anne-Elizabeth Stone (Bergen Fencing Club) took 11th place in the individual event, defeating Italy’s Alessia Di Carlo, 15-12, in the round of 32 before going out to Japan’s Misaki Emura in the 16, 15-11.

The competition featured 166 individual fencers and 22 teams participating and took place at the City’s Basaksehir Youth and Sports Hall. 

Other Team USA results at the Istanbul Women’s Saber World Cup included Elizabeth Tartakovsky (27, Manhattan Fencing Center), Magda Skarbonkiewicz (28, Oregon Fencing Alliance), Ryan Jenkins (39, Bergen Fencing Club), Siobhan Sullivan (47, Oregon Fencing Alliance), Tatiana Nazlymov (51, Nazlymov Fencing Foundation), Maia Chamberlain (55, Manhattan Fencing Center), Kara Linder (56, Univ. of Notre Dame NCAA), Chloe Fox-Gitomer (60, Oregon Fencing Alliance), Kaitlyn Pak (92, Manhattan Fencing Center), Honor Johnson (107, Bergen Fencing Club) and Atara Greenbaum (119, Univ. of Notre Dame NCAA).

In the women’s team saber event, the USA women’s fencers (Chloe Fox-Gitomer, Honor Johnson, Tatiana Nazlymov, Magda Skarbonkiewicz) took 14th place.
