PLOVDIV, Bulgaria — Fencing against the best under-17 fencers in the world, Team USA’s Cadet Epee fencers failed to medal on Saturday at the 2023 Junior & Cadet Fencing World Championships in Bulgaria.
But these young athletes — and fans of Team USA — can say with confidence that the future of our Epee team is bright.
All six Cadet Epee fencers finished in the top third of the final standings, with each falling short in close bouts during the Round of 64 or Round of 32.
In the Cadet Women’s Epee category, Leehi Machulsky from the Academy Of Fencing Masters (AFM) secured 18th place, followed closely by Yasmine Khamis from Alliance Fencing Academy in 19th. Sarah Gu from Medeo Fencing Club came in 34th.
In the Cadet Men’s Epee competition, Sergei Kudriavtcev from Alliance Fencing Academy finished 19th, while Alexander Bezrodnov from Medeo Fencing Club took 31st place. Luka Loncar from Olympia Fencing Center ended up in a tie for 36th.
While the medal-less results may seem disappointing, it’s important to remember that these athletes are competing against the world's best under-17 fencers. The strong showing from Team USA’s Cadet Epee fencers demonstrates their potential for growth and success in future competitions. And under the guidance of their similarly talented coaches, bright things are ahead for these young athletes.
