COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Applications have just opened for the volunteer role of Regional Coordinator, a position of pivotal importance in ensuring the continued prosperity of fencing in our communities.

USA Fencing is divided into six regions: Northwest (1), Midwest (2), Northeast (3), Southwest (4), South (5) and Southeast (6). Each region is overseen by the National Office, with the assistance of a Regional Coordinator who will serve a two-year volunteer term. (With a check-in at the one-year mark to ensure both USA Fencing and the Regional Coordinator want to continue the role.)

The Regional Coordinator is the backbone of the region they serve, and their job will require deep knowledge of the region's unique characteristics, local venue logistics, regional resources, and familiarity with both organizers and members. Strong pre-existing relationships with these parties are highly beneficial to the role.

While this is a volunteer role, as a small token of appreciation, USA Fencing will cover the cost of the Regional Coordinator’s USA Fencing membership (including the cost of the background check) during the Regional Coordinator’s tenure. Additionally, USA Fencing will reimburse any travel expenses incurred for approved site visits, including flights, mileage, hotel and meals.

Applicants need to meet the following minimum requirements:

• At least 18 years old at the time of application submission

• SafeSport Certified 

• A current background check

The Regional Coordinator will be responsible for:

• Monitoring the state of fencing and understanding the needs of the fencing membership within their region.

• Serving as the liaison between the Regional Events Manager at the National Office and the region’s membership, parents, club owners, event organizers and coaches.

• Disseminating important information as needed.

• Maintaining a comprehensive knowledge of the Regional Tournament requirements.

• Managing the review of regional tournaments alongside the Regional Manager.

• Answering questions related to equipment rules, tournament requirements, qualification paths, seeding, classifications, and the Regional Point system.

• Occasionally visiting regional tournaments to collect data and provide reports to the National Office.

• Participating in the Regional Bid process by providing feedback and discussion with the Regional Events Manager.

• Meeting with USA Fencing Regional Events Manager and other Regional Coordinators on a monthly basis to discuss regional needs and issues.

USA Fencing understands this is a volunteer role, and we acknowledge this opportunity will appeal to a very specific type of person who lives and breathes fencing. While Regional Coordinators must be willing to dedicate a few hours each week to the responsibilities outlined above, they’ll also have the freedom to make the role their own.

In other words, while certain decisions like final bid selections and the Regional Tournament Calendar will be made by USA Fencing staff, the Regional Coordinators have an important opportunity to shape USA Fencing’s present and future through their engagement and input.
