Daniel Chirashnya one of eight gold medals awarded on the seventh day of the 2023 National Championships and July Challenge, also known as Summer Nationals.

PHOENIX, Ariz. —  Just breathe. For Heartlyn Tabangay (Midwest Fencing Club), it was all about breathing and taking it one point at a time.

The Division II Women’s Saber National Champion talked about “doing breathing exercises. I'm trying to just focus on one point at a time. Because when you're down, like losing and pools, it's easy to get very confused and like, gosh, getting down yourself beating yourself up. You know, breathing has really helped me a lot and just staying focused.”

Tabangay has big goals going into next season as she celebrates her national title today and is hoping for more international tournaments on the cadet circuit going into next season. As she said “fencing is a major part of my life,” and she wants to see what she can do next.

Daniel Chirashnya, the Y-14 Men’s Epee National Champion, alluded to just how much work he has put into fencing to get this medal “I've been working towards it for so long, so many hours and days. And so it just feels great to finally get it.”

On his journey to gold, he made quite the comeback in his final bout after being down 9-14, he said “I was just trying to get the next touch and doing what my coach was trying to tell me to do. Just take it slow, one at a time, and I guess it just went my way.”

Arush Talasila, Division III Men’s Foil gold medalist and National Champion, was just so appreciative of everyone supporting him “I'm very grateful for all my coaches, my friends, especially my mom, driving me all over the place for fencing practice and just always dedicating herself to me.”

Talasila had a fairly large cheering section through his gold medal bout and acknowledged “at one part it was kind of like it gave me some pressure, but on the other part, it was just amazing.”
