Tabangay was awarded one of eight gold medals awarded on the ninth day of the 2023 National Championships and July Challenge, also known as Summer Nationals.

PHOENIX, Ariz. —  Out of all of the excitement on day nine of Summer Nationals, eight gold medals and National titles were awarded to fencers who fought so hard for them. Through long days, and for some a long week, they collected their first national titles all the way to their third of the week.

Heartlyn Tabangay was one of the fencers who fought hard, and on her third straight day of fencing claimed the Division III Women’s Saber gold medal and National title. Staying consistent and taking it one bout at a time is the key to success for Tabangay as she claimed her third National title in three days. She is all about staying constant and “not thinking about winning and just be in the moment.”

In her dominating win that claimed her third National title, she reflected on the fact that she hadn’t placed in every NAC she had competed in, and noted “this is a big week.” She continues to emphasize that she wants to fence internationally and continue to improve on her fencing.

Sophia Habek “trained super hard” for her Y-10 Women’s Epee gold medal and National title. Habek worked on multiple aspects of her fencing that played out in her journey to the medal stand and as soon as she got that final touch she couldn’t help but think to herself “this is amazing.”

Andy Zheng collected a National title and gold medal in Y-12 Men’s Epee, his first gold medal at a national tournament. He has worked incredibly hard to earn this medal especially after fencing earlier in the tournament in the Y-14 event. He worked on staying warm today throughout the entire event after fencing in Y-14, “when I was fencing in Y-14 I was sitting, doing nothing, so today I decided to move around and to stay warm,” which ultimately helped lead him to the top of the medal stand.
