Day two of the tournament brings more smiles with lots of victories.

RICHMOND, Va. -  The second day of the December SJCC and Division I North American Cup continued on with five events showcasing some of the best fencing in the country.

Carolina Stutchbury (Epic Fencing Club / SCAD-Atlanta Fencing) took home gold in the Division I Women’s Foil event. It was a hard fought bout as she “had to push through the pain” in her gold medal match. She said “it was good preparation for next week, I am going to the foil world cup next weekend in Serbia, so it was good mental preparation.”

The Division I Men’s Saber competition was hard fought as well. Daryl Homer OLY (Peter Westbrook Foundation) was ranked 65th coming out of pools and fenced his way to a gold medal. He said “I was nervous in the pool. I was nervous, a little bit tight, and I don’t know if people are familiar with the selection criteria [for the 2024 Olympics] but it’s an intense time for all of us. We are all trying to make the team and this team is very very competitive.”

Homer continued saying “I am grateful that I pushed.I think the biggest thing today that I got back today, finally, was my fighting spirit. Even when I was down in those matches, I kept my head down, I kept thinking about what I could do, not what was happening in the past. I think that was the biggest thing today that really got me through.”

Philip Kang (Alliance Fencing Academy) was feeling good about bringing home gold today as he said “I am feeling good, I feel like I didn’t let down my coaches who were cheering me on. I feel like this is a good result.”  Kang said that his coaches cheering him “helped a lot” during his semifinal bout and it just overall pumped him up to continue on.
