Four fencers strike gold on final day of the December SJCC & Div I NAC.

RICHMOND, Va. -  The fourth and final day of the December SJCC and Division I North American Cup, brought four more gold medalists to the podium.

The final morning of the tournament kicked off with a Cadet Women’s Saber gold medal match where Xuanyi Zhang (LA Fencing Academy of Pomona) claimed gold.

Shortly after that final, a Cadet Women’s Foil gold medal match was set. Nadia Hayes (CAN) stepped on to the finals strip and claimed gold not long after. She talked about how she “drank a lot of water today” and kept telling herself “to keep focused on every match especially, and I think that’s what helped a lot.”

To wrap up the weekend and about 12 hours after the initial start of the event, Division I Men’s Epee took the finals strip for a gold medal match. Eventually, Sergey Bida (Academy Of Fencing Masters (AFM)) took the final touch to claim gold.

Bida not only competes but is a coach at AFM, and gave advice to younger fencers on how to make it through a long day of fencing, saying “my advice is to practice more, make your training longer.” He talked about using your venue to your advantage to help you get ready for the long tournament days.

Overall 18 gold medals were handed out through the weekend. There were incredible bouts, fierce competition, and big smiles. It was a great weekend of fencing in River City, and we can’t wait to do this all again in January in San Jose!
