(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – As part of the celebration of the end of the 2011-2012 season, fencing’s international federation, the FIE, recently honored Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) and Olympic referee Doug Findlay (Columbus, Ohio) during the organization’s annual gala in Moscow.

Zagunis, a two-time Olympic Champion in women’s saber, was named the Overall World Cup Champion for the fourth straight season. Zaguis also received the honor at the conclusion of the 2005-2006 World Cup season.

Fencing in eight Grand Prix and World Cup tournaments during the season, Zagunis earned medals in seven events, including gold in the Orleans and Tianjin Grand Prix competitions. Zagunis also took gold at the Pan American Championships and placed fourth at her third Olympic Games.

The FIE honored Findlay as being the best overall foil referee in the world for the 2011-2012 season.

Findlay was selected by the FIE to referee at the London Olympic Games for the second time where he directed the men’s and women’s individual foil medal rounds and the gold medal bout for women’s team foil.

Throughout the season, Findlay also refereed numerous final bouts on the World Cup circuit, including the events in Paris, France; La Coruna, Spain; and Wakayama, Japan.
