(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Fencing in the first Junior Foil World Cup of the season, 18-year-old Jacqueline Dubrovich (Riverdale, N.J.) and 19-year-old Brian Kaneshige (Maplewood, N.J.) won bronze medals in the women’s and men’s events, respectively, at the Luxembourg Junior Foil World Cup this weekend.
For Dubrovich, the bronze was the first Junior World Cup medal for the two-time Junior World Team silver medalist.
After posting a 5-0 result in the pools on Sunday, Dubrovich earned a bye into the table of 64 as the seventh seed where she defeated Leandra Behr (GER), 15-3.
In the table of 32, Dubrovich racked up an 11-0 lead during the first two minutes of her bout against Martyna Przybylowicz (POL) who made a brief comeback before Dubrovich closed out the bout, 15-7.
Dubrovich met 2012 Cadet World Team member Sabrina Massialas (San Francisco, Calif.) who kept the opening period tight as Dubrovich held just a one touch (5-4) lead.
Dubrovich built momentum in the second period where she opened with six straight touches and went on to close out the bout, 15-6.
In the quarter-finals, Dubrovich led from start to finish against 2011 Cadet World medalist Martina Sinigalia (ITA) and advanced to the semifinals after a 15-9 victory.
Dubrovich fenced another Italian in her next bout – Francesca Palumbo who took an early lead before winning the bout, 12-8.
Although Kaneshige has won three previous Junior World Cup medals, his bronze medal finish in Luxembourg is the first in nearly two years for the 2011 Junior World Team Champion.
Like Dubrovich, Kaneshige went undefeated in his pools on Saturday and earned a bye into the table of 64.
Kaneshige trailed James Brosnan (GBR) by two touches (11-9) after the first period, but he outscored his opponent, 6-1, in the second to win the bout, 15-12.
In the table of 32, Kaneshige defeated Philip Alexander Femoe (DEN), 15-7.
Russian Kirill Zhukov led their table of 16 bout, 8-6, after the first period, but Kaneshige made another comeback as he outscored Zhukov, 9-1, in the second period to win the bout, 15-9.
Kaneshige trailed Alexander Pivovarov (RUS) by three touches (11-8) at the end of the first period of the quarter-finals, but closed the bout at 15-14, in the second period.
Kaneshige ended the day with a bronze medal after a 15-9 semifinal loss to Alexander Tsoronis (DEN).
