(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Fifteen-year-old Eli Dershwitz (Sherborn, Mass.) won two cadet titles at European tournaments in 2010 and began this season on the same note as he earned his third career international gold medal at the Konin European Cadet Saber Cup in Poland on Saturday

Dershwitz, who finished 12th at the Cadet World Championships for athletes 17 and younger in March, was one of three Americans on the podium as his teammates Andrew Mackiewicz (Westwood, Mass.) and Michael Costin (Culver City, Calif.) each won bronze for the first time on the international level.

Dershwitz was one of five U.S. Team members to emerge from the pools with a perfect 6-0 record. In addition to Dershwitz, Peter Pak (Santa Monica, Calif.), Vincent Argenzio (Revere, Mass.), Isaac Buchwald (El Granada, Calif.) and Jason Meng (Dallas, Texas) also won six straight bouts. Pak, a 2011 Cadet World Team member, gave up only six touches to earn the top ranking after the pools.

Following the pools, all 15 U.S. Team members advanced through the preliminary rounds to the table of 64.

Dershwitz won his table of 64 bout against Balint Kossuth (HUN), 15-12, and edged Artem Buchkovskiy (RUS), 15-14, to advance to the table of 16 where he defeated Argenzio, 15-8.

In the next round, Marco Lecci (ITA) won the bout, 15-14, but Dershwitz earned a decisive victory over Alexander Vasiaev (RUS), 15-8, in the repechage to advance to the quarter-finals.

Although Dershwitz was matched up with Lecci again in the quarters, he easily won the bout, 15-9.

Costin and Jonah Shainberg (Rye, N.Y.) went undefeated in the tables to advance to the quarters as well while Mackiewicz rebounded from a one-touch loss in the table of 16 to Rouven Redwanz (GER) to win his next three bouts in the repechage and advance to the quarters.

Mackiewicz won his quarter-final bout against Shainberg, 15-11, and Costin defeated Kostyantyn Voronov (UKR), 15-8.

With three medals guaranteed for Team USA, Dershwitz defeated Mackiewicz, 15-9, in the semifinals to move on to the gold medal bout against Dmitriy Danilenko (RUS) who was coming off a 15-12 semifinal win over Costin.

Dershwitz handed Danilenko his first loss of the day when he won gold with a 15-12 victory.

Competition continues on Sunday with 15 U.S. Team members competing in the women’s divisions.
