U.S. Men Finish 13th at the New York World Cup

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – The U.S. Men’s Saber Team finished 13th at the third qualifying event for the 2012 Olympic Games on Sunday at the New York World Cup in New York City.

Team USA lost the first two bouts of the day, but came out with two wins at the end to score valuable qualification points.

Team USA opened with a bout against ninth-seeded Ukraine in which the Americans trailed during the first three bouts, but 2008 Olympic silver medalist James Williams (New York City, N.Y.) scored seven touches to take the lead, 20-19.

In the sixth match, Beijing silver medalist Tim Morehouse (New York City, N.Y.) built a four-touch lead and two-time Senior World Team member Daryl Homer (New York City, N.Y.) held the lead in the seventh.

By the ninth match, though, Ukraine pulled ahead with 11 touches scored to with the bout, 45-43.

Team USA dropped down to the 9th – 16th place bracket where the United States faced a strong British Team that built an 11-touch lead by the start of the final match. Williams came in as the anchor and began working to whittle away the lead and closed the gap to seven touches, Williams was injured late in the match and Great Britain pulled out the win, 45-37.

The loss moved the United States into the 13th – 16th place bracket and an opening bout against Poland. With Williams out of commission, two-time Senior World Team member Ben Igoe (Staten Island, N.Y.) moved into the lineup for the second time during the day. Poland began the bout strong and earned a 15-10 lead by the end of the third bout, but Homer scored 10 during the fourth to take the lead back, 20-19.

Going into the final match, however, Team USA was down by three, but Morehouse returned with a vengeance, determined to secure the win. Morehouse fenced well and scored eight to win the bout, 45-43.

With one bout left to secure 13th place points, Morehouse, Homer and Igoe took the lead against Spain early and held on throughout the bout. Up 40-38 at the start of the ninth bout, Homer came in as the anchor and finished the bout 45-43 to place 13th in the 20-team field.
