Daryl Homer and Courtney Hurley Launch Team USA at 2010 Junior World Championships

The Team USA Junior-aged fencers took to the strip Monday in men’s sabre and women’s epee on the opening day of the 2010 Junior World Championships at the Haydar Aliyev Sport and Concert Complex in Baku, Azerbaijan. Pacing the way for the United States was Daryl Homer (Jamaica, N.Y.) in 7th and Courtney Hurley (San Antonio, Texas) in 18th in their respective events. 

Homer out touched his way to the quarter-final round where he was defeated by eventual Junior World silver medalist Sebastian Schroedter of Germany, 15-11. Homer, who finished seventh overall, started the day with a first-round victory over Arthur Chahda of Brazil, 15-10. Homer, a 2009 Junior World bronze medalist, knocked off his next two opponents, Lorenzo Romano of Italy, 15-6, and No. 2 seed Benedikt Wagner of Germany, 15-13. 

Also competing competing in men’s sabre were Evan Prochniak (Philadelphia), who finished 16th, and Eric Fass (Beverly Hills, Calif.), who finished 38th. Prochniak opened the tournament with a 15-12 decision over Mateusz Jasinski of Poland, and out touched home favorite Murad Aliyev of Azerbaijan, 15-8. Prochniak’s tournament ended with a heartbreaking 15-13 loss to Schroedter, as well. Fass was defeated in the first round by Bulgaria’s Pancho Paskov, 15-10.

The Junior women’s foil team was highlighted by Hurley with an 18th-place finish, who is also the 2009 Junior World team bronze medalist. She opened the tournament with a dominating victory over Daria Strelnikov of Israel, 15-3, and then matched up with Emma Vaggo of Sweden in the second round, to lose 15-12. Vaggo finished eighth.

Katharine Holmes (Washington D.C.), who was competing in her first Junior Worlds, opened with a 15-6 decision over Eva Jeza of Slovenia. Much like Hurley, she dropped her second round competition to Laura Staehli of Switzerland, 15-9, who finished seventh. Holmes finished 23rd. Neely Brandfield-Harvey (Houston), also competing in her first Junior World Championships, finished 40th. 

On Tuesday, the 2010 Junior World Championships will feature women’s foil and men’s epee. Team USA won an astonishing 11 medals at the 2009 event. After three days of competition at the 2010 Worlds, Team USA garners two golds and one bronze. The 2010 Junior and Cadet World Championships are organized by the Azerbaijan Fencing Federation and the Azerbaijan Olympic Committee.
