Kentucky's Lee Kiefer and Texas' Courtney Hurley Win Coupe Heracles Junior World Cup Titles
By Anthony Bartkowski
A pair of talented fencers for Team USA claimed their respective events at the Coupe Heracles Junior World Cup in Budapest, Hungary, Jan. 3-5. Leading the charge was women foil star Lee Kiefer (Lexington, Ky.) and women epee contender Courtney Hurley (San Antonio, Texas).
Kiefer, the 2009 Cadet World Championships silver medalist, was joined at the women's foil award ceremony by Team USA bronze medalists Nzingha Prescod (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Margaret Lu (Greenwich, Conn.).
Kiefer advanced to the elimination round and started it by defeating her sister, Alexandra, 15-7. She battled her way through the rest of the bracket before winning the semifinal round against teammate Lu, 14-9. In the gold-medal bout, Kiefer upended Russia's Inna Deriglazova, 15-10, for the championship.
Hurley defeated Sweden's Johanna Bergdahl to claim the women's epee title. Finishing third were a pair of Italy fencers, Rosella Fiamingo and Brenda Briasco.
Also, Eric Arzoian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) fenced to a bronze-medal finish in junior men's sabre division.
