(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Eighteen-year-old Alex House (Upton, Mass.) earned the best Junior World Cup result of his young career on Saturday when he placed eighth out of 233 fencers at the Gothenburg Men’s Epee Junior World Cup in Sweden.
Seeded 49th after a 4-2 result in the pools, House earned a bye into the table of 128 where he defeated Antoni Manel Carles (ESP), 15-7.
In the table of 64, House outtouched Valentin Sannier (FRA), 15-14, and won his next bout over Margo Lehis (EST), 15-13, to advance as one of three U.S. fencers in the table of 16.
House won his table of 16 bout over top seed Houssam Elkord (FRA), 15-10.
Conor Shepard (Colleyville, Texas) and Samuel Koch (San Francisco, Calif.) were each eliminated in the table of 16, but the results for both athletes marked their best finishes at a Junior World Cup.
Shepard placed 12th after a 15-13 loss to Mateusz Antkiewicz (POL) and Koch lost his bout to eventual gold medalist Nikolaus Bodoczi (GER), 15-3, to end the day in 16th place.
House earned an eighth place finish after a 15-10 loss to Nelson Lopez Pourtier (FRA) who went on to win the silver medal.
In the cadet (U17) women’s event, Amanda Sirico (Bowie, Md.) advanced to her third straight quarter-final at a Cadet European Cup. After winning the silver medal in Klagenfurt, Austria in October and gold in Grenoble in November, Sirico placed sixth in Sweden on Saturday.
Sirico, the top-ranked cadet women’s epee fencer in the United States, went undefeated in the pools to earn a bye into the table of 64 where she won her bout against Daniela London (ISR), 15-11.
Sirico won her next two bouts against Sofia Cazaerck (BEL) and Emilia Cecilie Borrye (DEN) by scores of 15-9 and 15-13, respectively, to advance to the quarter-finals.
Fourteen-year-old Belinda Mo (Irvine, Calif.) and 15-year-old Kasia Nixon (Los Angeles, Calif.) each placed in the top 16.
Mo, who went undefeated in the pools, won her first two bouts in the direct elimination table, but lost to eventual gold medalist Oceane Tahe (FRA), 15-5, to finish in 10th place.
Nixon, who won bronze at the Grenoble Cadet European Cup in November, finished in 14th place. A front-runner for the 2013 Cadet World Championship Team, Nixon won her bouts in the tables of 64 and 32. In the table of 16, Nixon lost 15-8 to Alona Komerov (ISR) who went on to win the silver medal.
