David Seuss Wins Gold, Cristina Gordet Takes Bronze in Bulgaria

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – David Seuss (Charlestown, Mass.) made his third straight Veteran World medal a gold one on Wednesday when he claimed Team USA’s first championship of the event with a win in the men’s 60-69 saber competition in Varna, Bulgaria.

Seuss, who won bronze at the last two Veteran World Championships, earned a bye into the table of 16 as the fifth seed out of the pools. After a 10-5 win against Carl Morris (GBR), Seuss defeated teammate Garik Gutman (Rockville, Md.), 10-6, in the quarter-finals.

Seuss’s success continued in the semifinals when he controlled his bout against two-time Veteran World medalist Fabrizio Filippi (ITA) for a 10-5 win.

In the gold medal final, Seuss avenged his 2012 semifinal loss to Giulio Paroli (ITA) and won the bout, 10-7.

After winning gold in 2011 and bronze in 2012, Seuss’s teammate, Wang Yung (Bellevue, Wash.) fell short of the podium on Wednesday.

Yung defeated Helmut Helfricht (GER), 10-7, in the table of 32 and won his table of 16 bout against Alex Scherbakoff (AUS), 10-5.

Yung finished eighth overall after a 10-8 loss to Richard Bonehill (GBR).

A bronze medalist in 2005 and silver medalist last year, Joseph Streb (Columbus Ohio) started strong with a 10-1 win over Koh Yamada (JPN) in the table of 32.

In a rematch of their 2012 final bout, Streb lost to Filippi, 10-5, in the table of 16.

Cristina Gordet (Somerville, Mass.) made a mark at her first Veteran World Championships with a bronze medal win in the women’s 50-59 epee competition.

Although a 2-3 result in pools left Gordet with a 20th seed in the table of 32, she won her opening direct elimination bout over Helle Andersen (SWE), 10-4.

Gordet advanced to the medals rounds after one-touch victories against third seed Paula Soitiala (FIN), 10-9, and Gyorgyi Ferdinandy (HUN), 9-8.

Gordet nearly upset four-time Veteran World Champion Liudmila Chernova (RUS) in the semifinals, but fell one touch short and lost the bout, 10-9.

Two of Gordet’s teammates each advanced to the quarter-finals.

Marcia Pierce (Richmond, Ky.) placed sixth in her Veteran World debut. Pierce won her first direct elimination bout against Lorette Laschetti (IRL), 10-9, and took out the reigning Veteran World Champion, Corinne Aubailly (FRA), 9-8, in the table of 16.

Pierce’s run came to an end, however, when she lost to 2012 Veteran World silver medalist Gianna Cirillo (ITA), 10-5, in the quarters.

First-time Veteran World Team member Amy Montoya (Las Vegas, Nev.) also had an impressive debut with a seventh place result in Varna.

Montoya defeated Dominique Elin (FRA), 10-7, in the table of 32 and won took a 10-9 win in the 16 over top seed Sarah Osvath (AUS).

The American was overpowered by Chernova in the quarters, however, and lost the bout, 10-5.

Also fencing at her first Veteran Worlds, Cristina Ford (Salem, Ore.) defeated Masayo Toeda (JPN), 10-5, but lost to Cirillo, 7-6, in the table of 16.

In the 50-59 men’s foil event, two-time Veteran World Team member Jamie Douraghy (Los Angeles, Calif.) was the only American to advance to the table of 16.

After a bye into the table of 32, Douraghy defeated Mark Baker (GBR), 10-6, but lost to eventual silver medalist Peter Marduchajev (GER), 10-7, in the next round.

Christopher Hagen (Brooklyn Center, Minn.), a first-time Veteran World Team member, opened with a 10-4 win over Bas Mondt (NED) in the table of 64.

In the table of 32, Hagen lost to third seed Attila Czak (HUN), 10-5.
