(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – USA Fencing is now accepting applications and nominations for two coaching awards given by the United States Olympic Committee: the Developmental Coach of the Year Award and the “Doc” Counsilman Science Award.

The deadline for submission for both honors is 3 p.m. MDT on August 25, 2017. Anyone is eligible to nominate a coach or coaches may nominate themselves.

The USOC Developmental Coach of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding  youth club coach, school coach, junior-level coach or a coach directly responsible for guiding athletes to the junior and/or elite level. This award is based on the accomplishments from January 1, 2017 through September 1, 2017. The developmental coach’s application should address the following areas: record/performance of his or her athletes, service to the sport of fencing, coaching character, coaching honors received, service to his or her community and honors and recognition of the coach’s athletes.

The “Doc” Counsilman Award honors a coach who utilizes scientific techniques or equipment as an integral part of his or her coaching methods, or has created innovative ways to use sport science, such as biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, technology, strength and conditioning and exercise physiology.  The coach’s application should address the integration of sport science, impact on his or her athletes’ performance, coaching honors received and his or her contribution to the sport of fencing.

The “Doc” Counsilman Award application can be found here.

To be eligible for either award, the coach must be a current member of USA Fencing in good standing and currently coaching or within one year of retirement as a coach. USA Fencing Resource Teams will review the applicants/nominees and nominate one person for each award to the USOC. The USOC will then select the USOC Developmental Coach of the Year and “Doc” Counsilman Science Award recipients from the nominees submitted by all of the National Governing Bodies. USA Fencing reserves the right to withhold a nomination for the “Doc” Counsilman Award if it deems that the standards for the award were not met.

To apply or nominate someone for either honor, please complete the appropriate form and submit it along with an electronic head shot to Sam Callan (s.callan@usfencing.org) no later than Noon MDT on August 23, 2017. Please put the name of the award in the subject line. The USA Fencing nominees to the USOC will be selected by early September 2017.
