USA Fencing is thrilled to announce a dynamic new partnership with the world’s leading youth achievement award, giving fencers a leg up in life.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — In fencing, the difference between victory and defeat can be less than an inch. That’s why fencers practice and train so hard.
But how might a young fencer gain an edge off the strip? They can start with The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award USA. The Award, founded in 1956 by His Royal Highness Prince Philip and Kurt Hahn, Outward Bound founder, has been achieved by more than 8 million students in more than 120 countries and territories.
USA Fencing is thrilled to announce a dynamic new partnership with the world’s leading youth achievement award, providing young fencers an exciting new way to earn a unique, internationally recognized credential for activities and experiences while developing the skills that universities and employers are seeking.
The partnership allows USA Fencing members aged 14 to 24 to participate in the globally recognized program known for fostering resilience, self-confidence, leadership, and community involvement through personalized, goal-oriented activities. Participants in The Award USA program can achieve a Bronze, Silver and Gold, which is a recognized, prestigious global certification.
Phil Andrews, CEO of USA Fencing, sees personal value in this collaboration.
"As someone who has himself completed The Duke of Edinburgh Award, I know firsthand how transformative this experience can be,” he says. “It’s a fantastic way to develop character, grit and leadership — qualities we deeply value in fencing."
Young fencers participating in the Award can combine their fencing activities, community service, physical fitness goals, and personal skill development into a structured program that culminates in a prestigious recognition admired by universities and employers worldwide.
"Partnering with USA Fencing is incredibly exciting for us," says Suzanne Currie, CEO of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award USA. "Both of our organizations share a commitment to youth empowerment, discipline, and achievement. Together, we can offer young people a powerful platform to stand out and succeed both on and off the fencing strip."
Through this partnership, USA Fencing will actively promote the Award at major national tournaments, through monthly communications, and targeted outreach to high school-aged members and their families. Participants will have unique opportunities, including special events and experiences linked to fencing competitions.
