Call for Candidates: Referees’ Commission Vice Chair Positions Open

USA Fencing is now accepting applications for three open Referees’ Commission (RC) leadership positions, and we invite qualified referees to step forward and be part of the future of our sport.


Thank you to everyone who participated in the RC Nominating Committee process—both those who submitted their names and those who voted. Your voices were heard. We are pleased to announce that Will Curtis, Harrison Hue, and Andy Liu were selected to serve as the Nominating Committee representatives. Alongside them there will be two Referees Commission members, two athletes reps, one board liaison and one National Office Member as they all work to identify strong candidates for the upcoming RC election.

Submit your application by February 24th to be considered for one of the three open RC positions.

Positions Open for Election

  • Vice Chair of Rules and Examinations
  • Vice Chair of Domestic Assignments
  • Vice Chair of International Development and Assignments (IAD)

Below is a brief overview of key qualifications for each position. This list is not exhaustive. Full role descriptions and qualification requirements can be found on Referee Commission webpage at this link

Position Qualifications (Summary)

Vice Chair of Rules and Examinations

  • Minimum National Referee rating of N1 for the past five years
  • Demonstrated mastery of the USA Fencing and FIE rulebooks

Vice Chair of Domestic Assignments

  • National Referee rating of N1 or higher
  • Active national-level refereeing experience for the past three years
  • International refereeing experience preferred
  • Experience with spreadsheet and database management

Vice Chair of International Development and Assignments (IAD)

  • Hold at least two international referee licenses
  • One must be an FIE license
  • Second may be an FIE or WPF license
  • Minimum of five years of international refereeing experience, including events such as Junior or Senior World Cups, Grand Prix, or World Championships
  • Must officiate multiple international events per year
  • Experience in multiple weapons is preferred

Before Applying

When submitting your application, please include a written statement that:

  • Outlines your qualifications for the position you are applying for
  • Explains your reasons for running
  • Describes your vision for the position

Applicants who do not fully meet the listed qualifications may submit a petition, provided they include a clear rationale for consideration.
