U.S. Athletes Advance to Table of 32 at World University Games

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Six members of Team USA advanced to the table of 32 in the women’s foil and men’s saber on the final day of competition at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China on Monday.

In women’s saber competition, Emily Cheng (Gold River, Calif. / Ohio State University) earned the top seed for the Americans after the pools as she entered the table of 64 with a 26th seed. Cheng earned a bye into the table of 32, but lost to Wai Sum Au Yeung (HKG), 15-11, to finish 27th.

A 2010 Junior World Team member, Nicole Glon (State College, Pa. / Penn State University) finished 28th at her World University Games debut. Glon won her opening bout against Natalia Casares (ESP), 15-14, but lost in the next round to 2008 Junior World medalist Matylda Ostojska (POL), 15-3.

Faizah Muhammad (Maplewood, N.J. / New Jersey Insitute of Technology) entered the table of 64 with a #34 seed after a 2-3 result in the pools, but Muhammad had an impressive opening win against 2008 Olympic Team Champion Galyna Pundyk (UKR) whom Muhammad defeated, 15-12. In the next round, however, Muhammad fell to three-time Junior World Team member Rossella Gregorio (ITA), 15-4.

Three-time Junior World Team member Lian Osier (Battle Ground, Wash. / University of Notre Dame) also competed on Monday, but was eliminated in the pools.

A fifth-place finisher at the 2010 Senior World Championships, Miles Chamley-Watson (Philadelphia, Pa. / Penn State University) entered the event as one of the favorites for a medal and the three-time Senior World Team member had a strong opening to his day with a 6-0 pool record and #3 seed in the table of 64.

In the table of 32, however, Chamley-Watson lost to Moritz Hinterseer (AUT), 15-11, and finished 18th overall.

Ariel DeSmet (Portland, Ore. / University of Notre Dame), the reigning NCAA Champion, won five of his six pool bouts to earn a #9 seed and a bye into the table of 32 where he lost by a single touch to Daniel Steiner (HUN) and ended the day in 20th place.

Turner Caldwell (San Francisco, Calif. / Stanford University) earned the only bout win for the U.S. men in the table of 64 with a 15-6 defeat of Serghei Petrusenco (MDA). In the table of 32, Caldwell drew 2010 Senior World silver medalist Jun Zhu (CHN) and fenced a close bout, but lost the round, 15-11. Zhu went on to win the bronze and Caldwell finished 25th

Three-time Junior World medalist David Willette (Lafayette, Calif. / Penn State) also advanced to the table of 64, but lost to Jean-Paul Tony Helissey (FRA), 15-8, and finished 40th
