Team USA Wins Seven Medals in Y14 Division, Named Overall Team Champion

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Team USA concluded the Pan American Youth Championships in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Mexico with seven additional medals in the Y14 division and the overall team title on Monday.

With just over 40 athletes competing in 18 divisions, Team USA won 33 medals to lead the overall team ranking, placing the United States ahead of host nation Mexico and third place Chile.

Team USA continued its dominance of the boys’ foil competition on Monday in which Mohamed Hassan (St. Louis, Mo.) defeated Nolen Scruggs (Ozone Park, N.Y.) to win the gold medal and Yueh-Ting Tsai (Salt Lake City, Utah) earned the bronze.

In the girls’ epee division, Madeline Antekeier (Houston, Texas) won the silver medal after a final bout loss to Guadalupe Cruz (MEX).

Madeline Curzon (Sherwood, Ore.) advanced to the finals of the girls’ saber division as well where lost to Julieta Toledo (MEX) in the finals and earned the silver medal.

After winning gold in the Y12 foil division on Sunday, 11-year-old Xiao-Qing Tsai (Salt Lake City, Utah) earned a bronze medal in the girls’ Y14 foil.

Khai Fujita (Garden Grove, Calif.) also earned a bronze medal following his third place finish in the boys’ saber division.
