Six U.S. Athletes Qualify for Table of 64 at Seoul Foil World Cup

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Six members of Team USA will be among the top 64 athletes competing for Olympic qualification points on Saturday at the Seoul Foil World Cup in Korea. 

Miles Chamley-Watson (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Gerek Meinhardt (San Francisco, Calif.) qualified automatically to the table of 64 due to their rankings as the #2 and #14 foil fencers in the world. 

Meanwhile, 10 of their teammates competed in the pools and preliminary tables on Friday to earn a chance at the remaining 48 slots.

Alexander Massialas (San Francisco, Calif.) and Kurt Getz (Rye, N.Y.) each won five of six pool bouts to place in the top 16 of the pools and qualify for the table of 64.

Race Imboden (Brooklyn, N.Y.) went 4-2 in the pools to earn a first-round bye in the preliminary tables. Imboden then won his next bout to advance to competition on Saturday.

David Willette (Lafayette, Calif.), who won his second Junior World title in April with Imboden and Massialas, earned the final spot for Team USA. Willette won three of five pool bouts as well as his next two bouts in the preliminary tables.

The remaining six U.S. team members made the cut after the pools, but did not advance to the table of 64. Six other U.S. athletes advanced out of the pools, but did not

Juniors Turner Caldwell (San Francisco, Calif.) and Jeremy Goldstein (Westport, Conn.) met in the first round of the preliminary tables with Caldwell taking the win, 15-10, before losing his next bout to James Davis (GBR), 15-11.

Ben Parkins (The Woodlands, Texas), Ariel Desmet (Portland, Ore.), Jerry Chang (Mountain View, Calif.) and Andras Horanyi (Boulder, Colo.) each lost his opening bout in the preliminary table.

On Saturday, preliminary competition also will begin for the women’s grand prix event with seven U.S. athletes participating. Fourteenth-ranked Lee Kiefer (Lexington, Ky.) will be exempt from competition until Sunday.
